hi all! i wanted to create a reference list for us to remind us that the gift of our particular orientation should be celebrated with respect; that there are many people of glbt orientation who have impacted us positively, whose efforts in the face of discrimination have empowered us to become more embracing of our true natures, and contributed to creating the social context where that is possible, now more than ever.

here is a list of people that immediately come to mind a positive role glbt models for me:

Roberta Dunn, MCC Pastor
Mel White
Harvey Milk
Joe Solmonese, HRC President
Dan Savage, activist
Alvin Ailey, choreographer
Toby Johnson, author and publisher
Andrew Sullivan, author and activist
Jane Addams, social reformer and nobel prize winner
Christine Jorgensen

can you add some of your own?

Ron,

No one to add, but I've just GOT to put in a word for Harvey Milk, the "Mayor of Castro Street". He didn't show up until after I had already left SF, but man, did I ever hear about him from my friends. He was larger than life, a kind of cult hero, someone who would even stand against the local gay "establishment" if he had to. When he was murdered I was totally shocked. It just seemed impossible that such a thing could happen.

Much love,
Larry

I can add a few notable Gay men. They include
Jeremy Hooperf a twenty something young Gay man who took the letters GAY and created the empowering website Good As You
http://www.goodasyou.org/

His message is GAY=Good As You...check it out.

Then there is Harvey Fierstein an actor writer and intelligent role model seen on occasion as a guest on In the Life the PBS monthly show on highlighting what gay means. My most memorable Harvey moment is when he spoke passionately about elder gay men mentoring young men about living with self respect.

Then there is Joe Kort a LCSW or Licensed Clinical Social Worker who authors books on living as a healthy gay man. He has a website with links to resources and he is an advocate of stopping CSA. Joe Kort is the reason I found this site.
www.joekort.com.

So the three additions are
1.Jeremy Hooperf
2.Harvey Fierstein
3.Joe Kort

thanks guys! i appreciate the participation. it looks like this thread is going to be mostly a personal one, so i will continue to add names, since i promised myself to begin to 'see gay role models' from now on. heck, we need all the validation we can get.

joe kort is on facebook

new names to add: openly gay politician in the house of representatives:

  • jared polis [d-col]
  • tammy baldwin [d-wis]
  • barney frank [d-mass]
  • gerry studds [d-mass]
  • steve gunderson [r-wis]
  • jim kolbe [r-ariz]

see more here

i believe as struggling malesurvivors it is important to acknowledge those representatives of the glbt community who are working on our behalf to lessen the climate of homophobia, making this country a safer place to be. will their work lessen the incidences of sexual violence against males? i dunno, but it can't make it worse than it already is, can it?

Many of these people were religious people (Christian or Jewish) who fought or are continuing to fight against religious bigotry in the English-speaking world. I would like to add others from other countries, for example, Spain, where gay people can marry now.

Here is my list of twelve. A number of these people I have known, some well:

Troy D. Perry, founder Metropolitan Community Churches (1968).

Lee Carlton, pastor and founder of many MCC Churches.

Thomas A. Gashlin, who succesfully spearheaded the fight against the Florida chapter of the American Family Association's campaign, which began in N. Florida (1992), despite death threats, anti-gay protesters, and repeated vandalism to his office and church.

Michael Piazza - Pastor of the largest mostly gay congregation in the world, the Cathedral of Hope in Dallas, TX.

Bishop John Shelby Spong, Episcopal Bishop who wrote several thoughful, scholarly books on gay people and religion.

John Boswell, Yale scholar who discovered rites used in the Catholic church up until the Middle Ages, which were same-sex commitment services.

Joe Kort - Gay Jewish therapist who wrote several books for gay men to help us overcome internalized homophobia.

Stuart Altschuler - Gay Jewish therapist who works to help gay men overcome their internalized homophobia, and to help others who were sexually abused as children to overcome this trauma.

The Right Reverend Thomas Bigelow, MCC pastor who returned to the Episcopal church to give an example of grace to a mostly blue-collar congregation in Seattle, WA.

Dr. Jerry Stephenson, who left the Southern Baptist Church ministry to work for the emotional freedom of people abused by the oppressive message of fundamentalist Christianity.

Rabbi Steven Greenberg, the author of Wrestling With God & Men: Homosexuality in the Jewish Tradition, the first openly gay Orthodox Rabbi.

Brad Gooch - Author of Dating the Greek Gods : Empowering Spiritual Messages on Sex and Love, Creativity and Wisdom.

found quite a list on facebook: [and my apologies if you feel this thread not pertinent to male survivor's gbt community, i support moving it.] i still think it is important to note the worthwhile contributions we make to the happiness of people every where. how would human quality of life be diminished by subtracting the influence of these great human beings?

also, i spent so many years of my life thinking that i was gay because i was abused. did you ever think that way?

here's the list:
Quote:

Having a list of notable gays, lesbians & bi-sexuals helps put a *face* on Prop 8 and on CIVIL RIGHTS issues being fought for across the country this very moment. It's easy to condemn people and things that are "abstract", but not when they have to think about specific people they're condemning and banishing to second-class citizenship. Their favorite authors, poets, musicians, artists, athletes, actors, directors, etc. etc.

Most people who voted for Prop 8 have NO idea about gay people and their myriad contributions to our lives... society...planet.

They listen to their right-wing leaders and pastors/preachers/priests/rabbis/mullahs and block out the rest. We MUST penetrate all the lies and misconceptions spread by the right wing who uses churches as their main channel for scaring people. We MUST break through the barrier of hate and ignorance. As we speak, the Christian Coalition is mobilizing to fight gay rights further.

You know what is most inspiring to me about these lists. With each category, I could think up a few people that were left out (like Billy Bean, ex-major league baseball player). But instead of just adding too, I realized that this list is really incredibly long! So many out artist/entertainers, politicians, activists, etc. I mean, did you guys realize that the person most likely to be promoted to Iceland's Prime Minister is a lesbian?! As many times we get kicked in the shins these days and have political set backs on gay marriage, adoption rights, etc., we are making progress. We are gaining acceptance.

Peace and love guys...

Michael

in spite of the tangle and confusion of issues around sexuality for survivors, here is yet another story showing cause for celebration for those of us who embrace our homosexuality without apology. don't spend your life questioning your sexuality spend your life loving it and living it.

all the best,

ron
