I want to buy my first suit this summer, and want to get it from somewhere that makes sure it fits properly and looks good.
I don't know what kind of suit i want yet, probably black i think. I'm not sure what i will use it for yet, but i want it.
Any suit ideas for me?

How about a nice grey pinstrip wool. Could be worn anywhere.

Thanks for the tips Joel you really seem to know your stuff!
I don't think Larry is much of a suit wearer himself but i will ask him, i think you are right that he will know some good places to buy suits from, and then hopefully i will have a more local branch near me

I think that you need an off-white suit, like the one that William Dafoe's character wore in the Harrison Ford movie Clear and Present Danger, complete with a matching hat, and some loud Hawaiian or Cuban shirts to go with it. I also have a white suit and on occasion enjoy mixing my white dinner jacket with black pants and a black mock neck golf shirt. I dressed that way for a formal dinner on Holland America and the doorman smiled and waved my wife and I in when he was turning-down slick guys wearing Docker's and polos. I have an old John Wayne movie where he dresses in a white suit in some south pacific non-military role too.
Just a thought,
Mark

I was thinking about a white suit lol, just to go crazy with it, but i doubt i would ever actually wear it, although if i had enough money i would buy a white suit for special occassions. I also like the idea of a hat to go with a suit, that is a real statement!

Hey, talk to Larry, he knows where to get a suit, I'm sure. I don't think Larry is much of a suit wearer himself but i will ask him, i think you are right that he will know some good places to buy suits from, and then hopefully i will have a more local branch near me What?????? I will have you know that when I was Site Admin I used to wear top hat and tails every day when I came into the Mod room. And we had a dress code too. All the mods had to wear three-piece suits, white shirts, conservative ties, proper haircuts like mine, and polished black shoes. Annnnywaaaayyyy ... okay, a suit. It depends what you want Lewis, and what occasions you think you will need it for. As this is your first suit I would choose something that will be as versatile as possible. When I defended my Ph.D. dissertation at Princeton I wore a cream-colored three-piece suit and the Stetson hat my wife had bought me the previous Christmas. My thesis adviser took me aside and asked me PULLLLEEEZZZZE don't go into the room looking like a Mississippi riverboat gambler. sigh Much love, Larry

My brother Lewis,
you have been blessed with much "fact and funny" (a phrase for my fellow Canadians, who listen to "the debaters" on CBC Radio).
look at the adverts for the better shops in your vicinity and get an idea of what you expect to spend and then take that number and double it (which will likely get you to within a few percentage points of what Joel suggests). Starting with the idea that you want quality and fit(service) and accepting that you will pay what it takes to get a quality garment(or garments) will surely serve you in the long run.
My take on a wise styling is to consider your audience, if you are embarking on a professional carreer then lean conservitive (starting with a quality Jacket and Slacks will work in most situations... and that gives you flexibility for varying audiances)
my 2 cents... enjoy the adventure...
My best wishes, Wes

Hey Lewis, you could go out and pick up a men's style magazine and look at the different styles and try to decide one that you like best from that. Here we have a magazine called GQ or Gentlemen's Quarterly. Or, don't even buy it, just flip through the pages and look at the differences and see if there is anything that stands out that you like.
Just a thought.

Until he went out of business, I bought jackets and suits from a family friend who sold suits for a living. Nothing makes me feel like a grown up the way a good quality well-tailored suit does. Mike P.S. THAT never goes out of style. what's wrong with going out of style? ;-)

I like a gray Herringbone coat with dark grey trousers and shirt myself.
Or all black with white sport coat and a narrow white tie in the 1930s style, have several of those.
