I'm sorry I was unable to report this until now... Since I protested Friday night I've had "family" issues.
I must tell you all this was an amazing experience! I feel so honored to have participated in a part of history!
After prop 8's passing in California was verified Wednesday night, a few of us began organizing a protest here in SLC. Wednesday it was just talk, Thursday we actually began organizing it. By that night, we had secured about 700 people and figured we'd have no more than 1000 but felt good about that.
We were to meet in a small park just 1/2 block from the Mormon church office building. We thought it would be big enough. I was overcome with emotion as I watched the park fill up with people, signs supporting love and equality were everywhere. Before you knew it, the park was packed and people were overflowing into the streets.
The latest numbers estimate we had over 3500 people marching in this protest! Gay, straight, children, elderly, black, white, of every religion! I was sooo proud!
We crossed in front of the church office building, in front of the temple and the tabernacle, wrapped around the temple! We stopped traffic for blocks. Our voice was heard!
This gave me hope! To see so many people unite for equality was an amazing experience. I believe these marches will go down in history as being equally as relevant as the equal rights marches in the 60's. I just hope it doesn't take as long to make change.
It was awesome... but I had to deal with some other stuff when it was all over. I'll post that in another thread.
