The Glimpse

It came upon me suddenly and it was big
I only saw it's shadow cover me like a dark doomsday shroud
I ran like hell and never looked back
I ran till there was only
the echoing silence reverberating it's menacing presence
like fallout from a detonated nightmare

My Story
My Art

Those glimpses hold such a powerful grip on us, don't they? Maybe it would help to bear in mind that they are the memories of a boy who was too young to understand what was happening to him. That is, they are the ways of viewing things as we were years ago, not as we are now.

I recall how one day I was talking to my mother about how big the abuser was. She looked at me with this astonished expression on her face, and then told me that in reality he had been a shortish kind of man and not at all imposing in any way. Those were just the impressions I had carried with me from the age of 10.

Much love,

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway.
Nobody living can make me turn back:
This land was made for you and me.
(Woody Guthrie)

Another great poem Doug. It is right on target. And Larry, thank you for helping to put those glimpses into perspective. That was powerful for me.

Peace and love guys...

very real trigger.

i have had these moments.
total panic and then running without a glance backward.
that happened a lot when i was a teen, but random violence is still a part of my life. this world is a dangerous place, especially at night on public transit.
even when there was no actual physical threat to logically justify the fear, i still had those feelings of anxiety and angst.
often, after i left, i would discover later that my suspicions were premonitions and that my departure had prevented or avoided violence. i have a good radar for trouble.

this feeling of fear haunts me no more. it has even left my dreams. i hardly worry any more. the worst has already happened a long long time ago.

thanks for the poem. blueshift.
