now have what i think to be 2 key contributors, neither is a complete answer but really there can be no singular true clear answer to a question such as this; really liked what mike had to say about worth too.

1. when farts became something to be ashamed of
2. when the word liability & its meaning was invented

to expand on the first in a more serious light; when the idea was hatched that we as a human were not good enough and required improvement. consumerism especially since the dawn of television has been telling us how we should be, think, act, build, provide, buy, spend.
