Party lines were notorious for other people listening in and then spreading gossip, kind of like unprotected wireless internet is nowadays.
Funny coinky dink.. I just had a conversation with a friend about ten minutes ago and all of a sudden he says "Did you hear that?" I didn't hear it, but he said he heard someone else's voice on the phone for a second or two.

I have heard entire conversations other people were having while I was talking to someone else on the home phone. These days I have heard that might be caused by crossed or shorted wires, especially if it is raining or flooding somewhere.
