Kiddie Porn Middie

By Josh Mitchell | Sun reporter
7:22 PM EDT, August 5, 2008
WASHINGTON - A midshipman was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to storing child pornography on a computer in his Naval Academy dormitory.

Michael S. Pollard, 23, also pleaded guilty to storing child porn on a laptop computer at his parents' home in Florida and making a false statement to authorities. The porn was found by a roommate who went to use Pollard's computer in early 2007.

Pollard, wearing a Navy white uniform, told the presiding judge that he downloaded some of the porn, including hundreds of images and videos of prepubescent boys, while attending the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island.

As his parents sat in the front row of the military courtroom at the Washington Navy Yard, Pollard tearfully thanked them for their support and apologized for the crimes.

"Over the years, I've led a double life," said Pollard, an aeronautical engineering major who aspired to be a Navy jet pilot. "I simply had a terrible illness that I couldn't handle on my own."

But prosecutors pointed to the "cruelty" of the images and their volume -- more than 1,000 pictures and videos were found on the two computers and an external hard drive -- in urging a harsh sentence. "They're being turned into sex slaves," Navy Lt. Justin Henderson said, referring to a video showing three boys ages 9 and 10 having sex.

The presiding judge, Navy Capt. Bruce Mackenzie, sentenced Pollard to six years in prison, but one year will be suspended under a plea agreement. Pollard was also ordered dismissed from the Navy and will likely be required to reimburse the government more than $100,000 for his taxpayer-funded education. He had been scheduled to graduate from the academy last spring.

The sentence must be approved by the convening authority, the Naval Academy's superintendent, who has the power to reduce the sentence but not increase it.

Pollard's civilian attorney, Larry N. Burch, called the sentence "inordinately harsh."

"That's a sentence someone gets who's a predator, not a voyeur," Burch said, adding that Pollard never tried to come into contact with children.

Throughout hours of testimony during the sentencing phase Tuesday, defense attorneys depicted Pollard as a well-intentioned young man suffering from a debilitating sexual disorder, paraphilia, and was afflicted with uncontrollable urges to watch young boys having sex.

Fred Berlin, a clinical psychologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital who specializes in sexual disorders, compared Pollard to an alcoholic. The Internet, he said, was like a keg of beer for Pollard.

Pollard has suffered from paraphilia since age 12 or 13, the doctor said.

"The behavior is being driven by a powerful, biologically based craving," Berlin said. "He is so driven it's almost as though it's tunnel vision."

"He did not believe he was hurting children," he added, saying Pollard seemed to be a "very decent young man."

He said there was nothing in his childhood to point to a cause of the disorder.

Pollard's father, Michael Pollard Sr., testified that he also suffered from an addiction to porn, and his mother compared her son's problem to her own addiction to alcohol. She said she has been sober for five years.

Both parents said their son was a polite man who wanted to be a pilot.

"I know my son's heart, and in my opinion, he's not a criminal," said Michael Pollard Sr., a retired master chief with the Navy. "Michael doesn't have a hurtful bone in his body."

As the sentence was read, Michael and Marjorie Pollard dabbed their eyes as their son stood quietly. Minutes later outside the building, a white van waited to take him to the Norfolk Naval Brig in Virginia.

This is how enablers and apologists are born. These parents' son's life is destroyed now, and in their opinion unfairly. I'm willing to bet they probably belong to the "it's only pictures" crowd now. It doesn't make me angry; it just makes me sad.

I find the overall tone of the article disturbing; one paragraph for the prosecution, and everything below it devoted to quoting Pollard's lawyer, and an expert witness for the defense (though the article doesn't go out its way to make clear that's why Berlin was there) followed by quotes from the heartbroken parents. I'd halfway expect something like this, if it were a wealthy or powerful family that could lean on the media to soften the coverage, but as it stands, weird and creepy. Also "paraphilia" is a general term, of which pedophilia is a sub-set, and while Pollard may have been obsessed with watching, rather than actively participating, i hear a lot more about progressive worsening w/ these guys than the other way around. If left unchecked, how long might've it been before pictures weren't enough for him? Yuck. If Pollard's not serious about wanting help, let's hope they keep a real close eye on him 5 years from now...

Oh, it is an Illness ! Well, we can't lock him up for being sick can we? Now, Mr. Prosecutor, say you're sorry and give him a ticket to Disneyland.

Will no one ever take responsibility for their actions?

In this whole case, the person I am most disgusted with is the convening authority (CA), Vice Admiral (VADM) Jeffrey Fowler, USN. He is the superintendent of the United States Naval Academy.

The CA is the person that approved giving this pervert only 5 years in the brig for this "entry-level" crime. You would think that he could comprehend the criminality of someone who is about to be an officer, a leader of men, sitting in his barracks watching this trash. You would think he could understand the danger he would unleash upon society in general if this character did not do a long term in the United States Disciplinary Barracks, but no.

Of course, VADM Fowler is no prize himself. 10 years ago, he was a 4 stripe Captain, USN. His sole goal in life was to make flag and everyone at Submarine Squadron 3 knew it. He was the embodiment of "fair weather friend". He was a difficult CO to work for, and I can understand, given this kid's father being a retired Master Chief, why he "did a favor".

Quick answer: They're not forced to take responsibility for their actions at that level

Well, i could've been wrong- i certainly know how the Navy protects what it considers to be their own- i just didn't a retired MCPO would rank w/ the brass that gets its own damn special cutlery (In accordance w Naval rules that date back to Admiralty days) Not that i'm opinionated about outdated tradition that preserves vestigal concepts of an elite deigned to be genetically made of superior material, or anything (cough)...

All I can say is "I remember". I was 13 and my friend was 11, though I don't recall any photos.

Anyone who would support this deserves to get the heave-ho out of the Naval Academy. There are thousands of really good young students who deserve the break more than this creep. Imagine how much time he has devoted to collecting all this trash.

Illness? Yeah- any time a large, insular, powerful organization's first and immediate concern is circling the wagons, putting the damage-control machine into overdrive, and the truth or the victims be damned, it makes me sick.
At least sailors are allowed to get married... but it's the same mentality of "duck and cover" that the Church has demonstrated in the past

I really wonder about this. It just seems so unbelievable to me that this obsession could develop entirely from within someone. I guess it's impossible to really know for sure.

What is that all about???? This really does make it sound like an innate drive, disorder. Like schizophrenia, or a disease.
