I guess we all reach or yearn for a kind of ethereal haven like the one you describe. When I was a kid, a close friend of mine (he was abused with me) and I had a treehouse where we went to feel safe. Either there or we would find a huge rock to climb up on. There we could talk about pirates, treasure, cowboys and the wild west, etc., and be transported away to safety. I often wonder how long that treehouse lasted.
