-and i can think of a couple of more obvious reasons why, but please have at it, gang. Meanwhile, i just wanted your thoughts on her, and why. I'll readily admit, there's a certain aspect to her personality and songwriting that makes me want to say, "While the issues you address in your career and songs are admirable to say the least, us str8 CSA survivors need someone like you and your message, too." No offense to all my GLBT brothers/sisters out there, but though i might get ridiculously choked up over her performing a particularly touching acoustic version of "True Colors", it's probably not all for quite the same reasons. Knowing Cyndi only from afar as i do, i'm sure there'd be nothing but warmth and compassion on her part, but- to condense this strange post into a shorter form, it breaks down into two thoughts: i want to thank her for all she's done, but also want to SCREAM "What about those of us who still feel we must hide, and struggle in silence?"
She's a hero to me- just through being herself.

I don't know, i'm babbling probably. Anyone have a coherent thought to offer?

Hi dgoods,

I'm not sure what kind of coherent thought you're looking for so I'll just say that I like Cyndi Lauper too. True Colors will send me to tears if I'm alone and make me sing right along with her if others are around. She does seem like she's a truly good person who does a great deal of charity work, not just writing checks either, she's there, especially for the children.

Thanks Trish! (you know, for replying, and stuff)
I think part of it might be that Cyndi has always felt "safe" to me- even as a kid, while i always thought she was attractive, i never felt sexually intimidated by her (unlike, say, Madonna!). She's always been fierce, funny and, like Dolly Parton before her, resigned to having many people write her off as shallow or ditzy, even though the reality is far from that- willing to let the superficial people fade away while the more perceptive folks remain to appreciate what she's really about.
I know she had a tough time growing up, is very empathetic, but has always refused to be anything but herself.
IDK- I guess this is a rough time for me, and it's nice to remember that people like Cyndi (and you, and all the other great MS'ers) are around. I'll sort it all out someday eventually.

You know, as much as I hate pop music, Lauper has always stood out as being an artist rather than just a pop musician. Of course, the only reason I really remember her all that well is because she sang the theme song to one of my favorite movies of all time, The Goonies, but she also has an unmistakable voice.

Yeah, I guess I feel intimidated by most female artists who use their sexual appeal to sell records. Lauper is different, though. She's very attractive, yet she always tried to show a flambouyant side instead.

Exactly:) How could I ever forget?

Rowdy Roddy Piper was one of my idols when I was 8. Thanks for the blast from the past.

Yeah sure,

I can dig Cyndi.

Lately, I've been into Alanis Morissette, I only have the jagged little pill album.

Here's a quote i found that might explain why Cyndi's on my mind lately.

(on speaking about her childhood)

"I survived a lot of things, but part of being a survivor is understanding boundaries; and now as an adult, I choose not to really discuss everything, because I have to show up for myself, and say 'these are my boundaries.'"

The lyrics to her song "Lies" are pretty heavy as well.

Okay, I admit it....I never heard of her. \:\( An age thing? I'm still into Janis Joplin. But sounds like I need to go check out this artist's music. Maybe I just don't recognize the name.

Much struggling up from my rocker,
Larry

Hey Larry,

I'd bet you've heard this song; your kids certainly have. Enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ph7p7DT53Y

You with the sad eyes
don't be discouraged
oh I realize
it's hard to take courage
in a world full of people
you can lose sight of it all
and the darkness inside you
can make you fell so small

But I see your true colors
shining through
I see your true colors
and that's why I love you
so don't be afraid to let them show
your true colors
true colors are beautiful
like a rainbow

Show me a smile then
don't be unhappy, can't remember
when I last saw you laughing
if this world makes you crazy
and you've taken all you can bear
you call me up
because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
shining through
I see your true colors
and that's why I love you
so don't be afraid to let them show
your true colors
true colors are beautiful
like a rainbow

Very cool Trish!
PS Larry- she's probably closer to your age than you think! You may have at least a vague recollection of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" from '83. She also used to cover Joplin plenty in her early years. Here's an example of how powerful a singer she is.

Hello dgoods

Am so with you on this one ...
Have been really apprecaiting Cyndi Laupers' range and back catalogue lately ...

Today's Cyndi song of choice Who Let In Rain

I love the line ...
"Cause you see black and white and I see red"
So appropriate for how many survivors see things.

Ya just gotta love Cyndi
