That's a great prayer. \:\) It's commonly used in 12-step programs and is very useful, I think. Thank you for sharing it. \:\)

The prayer you speak of is commonly referred to as the Saint Francis Prayer:
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.

An alternate translation is found in Chapter 11 (Page 99) of the "Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions", a book published by Alcoholics Anonymous* World Services, Inc.

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace;
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.
Amen.

The hymn version of Make Me A Channel of Your Peace is an anthem of the Royal British Legion and is usually sung every year at the Service of Remembrance in November at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It goes as follows:

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me bring your love,
Where there is injury your pardon Lord,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope,
Where is darkness, only light,
And where there's sadness ever joy.

O Master grant that I may never seek,
So much to be consoled as to console,
To be understood; as to understand,
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving to all men that we receive
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.

In the Catholic Church there is a Patron Martyred Saint of Rape and Sexual Abuse Victims and People with any Mental Disorder and for all entrusted Psychiatrist. Her Name is Saint Dymphna. her prayer is as follows;

O God, we humbly beseech You through Your servant, St Dymphna, who sealed with her blood the love she bore You, to grant relief to those who suffer from mental afflictions and nervous disorders, especially Rape Victims and those Of every type of Sexual Abuse
Saint Dymphna, helper of the mentally afflicted, pray for us!

The "Serenity Prayer" was drafted by the American Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971). Bill Wilson is said to have been an admirer or Niebuhr's writing and considered this particular prayer to be perfectly in harmony with the philosophy of the 12 Step recovery program, which is the origin of its use in AA and its sister fellowships.

Loc: in my own world in pittsburgh,...
i have one prayer that i pray. it was composed during my postulancy with the trappists at gethsemani; the trappist motto is 'god alone'. as i contemplated the components of me that have had the power to direct the choices which ultimately contributed to the shaping of my life, i realized that i had become the sum of all the things i desired, hungered for and thirsted for, ultimately making me a prisoner of that construction. in the seeking therein an 'i' was constructed that factored me down into smaller compartments, taking me very far off path toward unity. so i try to become this prayer, to live it, that it may bring me into alignment with the source of desire, hunger and thirst. what bliss to be able to find resting place in this welcoming womb.

'god alone'

may my only desire be for god

my only hunger for christ

my only thirst for the spirit of

god alone
