Here are some helpful quotes by great thinkers that I'm using in my recovery. If others also have found words that help them, I'd love to read them.

Em

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."
-Proust

"I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be."
-Albert Einstein

"Fall seven times, stand up eight."
-Japanese proverb

"The willow knows what the storm does not: that the power to endure harm outlives the power to inflict it."
- Blood of the Martyr

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."
- Franklin D. Roosevelt

"Never, never, never give up."
- Winston Churchill

"The most important of life's battles is the one we fight daily in the silent chambers of the soul."
- David O. McKay

"When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so regretfully upon the closed door that we don't see the one that has opened for us."
- Alexander Graham Bell

This last quote reminds me of what this board has done for me so far.

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."
- George Bernard Shaw

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others"....Nelson Mandela.

And others found here.

If I think I can't, I can't
If I think I can, I can

When we step out from the light of all we have known into the darkness of the unknown, one of two things will happen. We will either have something solid to stand on, or we will be given wings and taught to fly.

Thank you for that quote. My therapist has that one on the wall where her clients almost have to see it when they enter and leave the office. I've never really thought about it before, but that quotation is particularly appropriate for us.

I would add this one - I forget the source:

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I have no idea what a real good translation would be, but one of Antigone's replies to Creon in Sophocles' play "Antigone" has stuck with me all my life.

-- Not to join in hating, but to join in loving, I was born.

There's a quote from Dr. King that I used as my sig here for awhile.

--"(T)he end we seek is a society that can live with its conscience."

That one always has seemed so fitting here.

Thanks,

Joe

Yea, I'm a fan of short quotes too, but generally they are nonsensical rather than profound, i.e.

"Keep New York clean...eat a pidgeon." or

"if you can keep your head when everyone around you is loosing thiers, then you obviously don't understand the situation."

TODAY, TOMORROW, YESTERDAY
There are two days in every week
that we should not worry about,
Two days that should be kept free,
from fear and apprehension.
One is Yesterday
with its mistakes and cares,
its faults and blunders,
its aches and pains.
Yesterday has passed forever
beyond our control.
All the money in the world
cannot bring back yesterday.
We cannot undo a certain act
or take back a word we've said-
Yesterday is gone.
The other day we shouldn't
worry about is Tomorrow-
with its impossible adversaries,
its burdens, its hopeful promise,
and poor performance.
Tomorrow's sun
with either rise in splendor
or behind a mask of clouds,
but it will rise
and until it does,
we have no stake in tomorrow,
for it is yet unknown.
This leaves only one day-
Today.
Any person can fight the battle
for just one day.
It is only when we add
the burdens of yesterday
and tomorrow that we break down.
The sadness comes not from
the experience of today
but the remorse of bitterness
for something which happened yesterday
and the dread of what
tomorrow may bring.

Subject: Choose how to start your day

READ THIS, LET IT SINK IN, THEN CHOOSE HOW YOU START

YOUR DAY TOMORROW.

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate.
He is always in a good mood and always
has something positive to say.

When someone would ask him how he was doing,
he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be
twins!"

He was a natural motivator.

If an employee was having a bad day,
Michael was there telling the employee how to look
on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious,
so one day I went up to Michael and asked him,
"I don't get it! You can't be a positive person
all of the time.

How do you do it?"

Michael replied, "Each morning I wake up and say
to myself, you have two choices today.

You can choose to be in a good mood or
you can choose to be in a bad mood.
I choose to be in a good mood.

Each time something bad happens,
I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to
learn from it.
I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining,
I can choose to accept their complaining or...
I can point out the positive side of life.
I choose the positive side of life.

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.

"Yes, it is," Michael said. "Life is all about
choices.
When you cut away all the junk, every situation
is a choice.

You choose how you react to situations.
You choose how people affect your mood.
You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.
The bottom line:

It's your choice how you live your life."

I reflected on what Michael said.
Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to
start my own business.
We lost touch, but I often thought about him
when I made a choice about life instead of
reacting to it.

Several years later,
I heard that Michael was involved in a serious
accident,
falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive
care,
Michael was released from the hospital with rods
placed in his back.

I saw Michael about six months after the
accident.
When I asked him how he was, he replied,
"If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see
my scars?"

I declined to see his wounds,
but I did ask him what had gone through his mind
as the accident took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was
the well-being of my soon to be born daughter, "
Michael replied.

"Then, as I lay on the ground,
I remembered that I had two choices:
I could choose to live or ...I could choose to
die.

I chose to live."

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?"

I asked.

Michael continued, "...the paramedics were great.

They kept telling me I was going to be fine.
But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw
the expressions
on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got
really scared.
In their eyes, I read "he's a dead man. I knew I
needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting
questions at me,"
said Michael. "She asked if I was allergic to
anything.
"Yes, I replied."
The doctors and nurses stopped working as they
waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and
yelled,
"Gravity."

Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing
to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not
dead."

Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his
doctors,
but also because of his amazing attitude.
I learned from him that every day we have the
choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Matthew 6:34

After all today is the tomorrow you worried about
yesterday.

You have two choices now:

1. Delete this.

2. Forward it to the people you care about.

You know the choice I made.

.

Quotes about
Frank Fitzpatrick and his presentations

July 2, 1992, on PrimeTime Live.
Diane Sawyer on Frank Fitzpatrick

“In the story you’re about to see, the reawakened memory of one man forced a community, a church, and now a nation to face what happened back in the days when everyone wanted to look away.”

From later in the same broadcast

“Now these children are grown up and tracking him down - led by a man who says he’s going to see justice done.”

Comments from audience of Frank’s presentations at conferences

“Litany of names very moving and effective. Admiration, respect, and gratitude for your courage and persistence and continued witness - heroic & extraordinary virtue.”

“A job well done! Your presentation was outstanding. Your organization, of which my husband is a member, is to be commended.”

“A strong and courageous man. His testimony has helped many people.”

“Frank’s courage is truly inspiring. I was completely moved.”

“I found it encouraging and helpful. It has motivated me to speak out.”

“Frank & Sara: Thank you for what you’ve both done. Courage, kindness, and gentleness. Those words come to mind about you both. My life is changed. Love, Ann”

“Very good presentation. Very courageous and exciting. I liked the song/music especially. Very, very great.”

“Enjoyed his sense of humor, which has also helped me to survive my own sexual abuse.”

“What a gift you have given to so many survivors, a place and a home for support and courage.”

“Excellent presentation. Fun music pieces. Very sad and painful at times, but humor is a good method to help heal yourself.”

How about those after my name.

I think that they both apply to us.

When someone is seeking, it happens quite easily that he only sees the thing that he is seeking; that he is unable to find anything, unable to absorb anything, because he is only thinking of the thing he is seeking, because he has a goal, because he is obsessed with his goal. Seeking means: to have a goal; but finding means: to be free, to be receptive, to have no goal. You, O worthy one, are perhaps indeed a seeker, for in striving towards your goal, you do not see many things that are under your nose. - "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse

Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up save in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket - safe, dark, motionless, airless - it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. - CS Lewis

A few more:

Grief shared is grief halved. Joy shared is joy doubled.

Don't try to be a great man, just be a man and let history make it's own decision.

Measure twice, cut once.

Keep honking. I'm reloading. (Oh, like YOU'D think differently after driving in Massachusetts! \:D )

Jesus may love you, but the rest of us think you're an (deleted)!

Love God. Love your neighbor. Love yourself.

Forgive, but for yourself. Not for those who wronged you.

A resentment weighs you down like a lodestone. Give up hatred, because it takes up more of your energy.

(For my perps, thanks to Norman Schwartzkopf. Answering a reporter on the nature of Christian forgiveness on the battlefield) I believe it's God's function to forgive. We're just trying to arrange the meeting.

Okay, so some of mine aren't exactly loving, but you gotta admit, they can be appropriate!

Peace and love,

Scot \:D

Here's one I should have remembered before.

Know yourself.

Intuitively I've always been aware of the vitally important pact that a man has with himself, to be all things to himself, and to be identified with all things, to stand self-reliant, taking advantage of his haphazard connection with the planet, riding his luck, and following his bent with the tenacity of a hound.

Know yourself. If you need help, call the F.B.I.

I am convinced God has a sense of humor. Look at the platypus and Darwin existing on the same planet.

Getting better is all about finding behaviors more appropriate to life outside abuse and becoming accomplished at those behaviors. That reminded me today of this one.

How do I get out of here
Where do I fit in?

Learn to be still

"If there is any hope for the future, it surely must rest upon the ability to stare unflinchingly into the heart of darkness."
— unknown

"It is better to deserve honours and not have them, than to have them and not to deserve them."
— Mark Twain

"If I had a formula for bypassing trouble, I would not pass it round. Trouble creates a capacity to handle it. I don’t embrace trouble; that’s as bad as treating it as an enemy. But I do say meet it as a friend, for you’ll see a lot of it and had better be on speaking terms with it."
— Oliver Wendell Holmes

"Act the way you’d like to be, and soon you’ll be the way you act."
— Kerr Cuhulain, from Full Contact Magick (p. 107)

"One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but cannot be taken away until it is surrendered."
— Michael J. Fox

"But there’s another piece of me. The part that’s with my family. The family I chose; the family that chose me. I feel everything that hurts them, or makes them sad. I wouldn’t just kill for them; I’d die for them. They’re all I have. They’re everything I have. And what they give me is . . . that piece of myself that’s clean."
— Burke, from Pain Management by Andrew Vachss

"You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
— Eleanor Roosevelt, from You Learn by Living

"Don’t eye the top of the ladder, eye the next rung."
— Gen. Colin Powell

"There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self."
— Hindustani proverb

This next one may be a bit controversial, but I do think it fits here.
"The only way a (parasitic individual) could return after being got rid of was through pity. The same is true of any type of evil. Feeling sorry for people who are engaged in wrong action does nobody any good."
— Anderson Reed, from Shouting at the Wolf (p. 41)

"In all forms of warfare the loser is beaten in spirit before he is beaten in fact."
— David J. Rogers

"The human body has an amazing ability to cope with arduous situations and testing environments. People who have come through, after enduring terrible hardship under seemingly impossible conditions, are a living proof of this."
— John Wiseman

"Succeed in not fearing the lion, and the lion will fear you."
— Eliphas Levi

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it."
— Helen Keller

This next one makes me think about abuse. Though I would perhaps subsitute the word evil for mistakes in that case.
"There are mistakes too monstrous for remorse . . ."
— Edwin Arlington Robinson

"Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one."
— Jane Howard, from Families

"Human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind."
— William James

And one last one. I got these all off of one website, but only picked out a fraction that I felt would fit. or could fit depending on the person.
"Self-respect has nothing to do with the approval of others."
— Joan Didion

"To help is to heal, to hurt is to steal

Thought about writing Bono's next lyric but....I'm embarassed to say that it's a trigger for me. But I still like the song and I still LOVE the thought behind this lyric.
