Broccoli is a plant of the Cabbage family, Brassicaceae (formerly Cruciferae). It is classified as the Italica Cultivar Group of the species Brassica oleracea. Broccoli possesses abundant fleshy flower heads, usually green in color, arranged in a tree-like fashion on branches sprouting from a thick, edible stalk. The large mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves. Broccoli most closely resembles cauliflower, which is a different cultivar group of the same species, but broccoli is green rather than white. In the United States, the term refers exclusively to the form with a single large head. This form is sometimes called "Calabrese" in the United Kingdom, where sprouting (non-heading) types and those with underdeveloped flower buds are also sold as broccoli. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BroccoliWho knew?

In the United States, the term refers exclusively to the form with a single large head. Yep, in Europe we routinely get broccoli with multiple heads. I'm wondering how long it will take for this thread to hit 100 posts. What a totally new definition of "off-topic"! Go Brian! Yayyyyy!

I like the long thin 'Chinese' broccoli especially with a light garlic sauce.
Damn, it's only 07:26 and I'm thinking about lunch already!

I love broccoli too. In fact I ate some last night. I didn't know it existed until I moved to California in 1981.

OK, this is sufficiently random enough that i must reply. I like broccoli (and Brussels sprouts) too; but i'm not a huge fan of it when overcooked; food yet to be eaten shouldn't smell like what it's going to make your farts smell like tomorrow... What else about broccoli? Let's see; When it's raw, it makes my tongue/throat kinda burn a little, like radishes- same with cauliflower. Speaking of cauliflower, "Romanesco" broccoli is a hybrid of broccoli and cauliflower (and is often pointed to as a good example of fractal self-similarity). And, of course, i would've mentioned "Chopping Broccoli" if ineffable hadn't already beaten me to it

I don't mean to be gross, I like broccoli - but it gives me gas. I still eat it though. You just don't want to hang with me afterwards. LOL

My three year old niece will eat anything. Brussel sprouts, green beans, peas. I think she'd even eat lint if you put cheese on it.
But she will not eat brocolli. She tried once, because she also thought she would eat anything. It came right back up again.
Regurgitated brocolli is not a pleasant site.

No, that was George Sr. Here's the quote in full:
"I do not like broccoli and I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli. Now look, this is the last statement I’m going to have on broccoli. There are truckloads of broccoli at this very minute descending on Washington. My family is divided. For the broccoli vote out there: Barbara loves broccoli. She has tried to make me eat it. She eats it all the time herself. So she can go out and meet the caravan of broccoli that’s coming in."

I love broccoli now. It is one of the most nutritious of vegetables. But as a kid I hated it. My mom would serve things I didn't like very much. I hated coliflower, cabbage, rutabagas, turnips, lentils. I refused to eat grapefruit unless it was pink. Once when I was 8 years old, my mom served me a half grapefruit that wasn't pink. I insisted that I wouldn't eat it unless it was pink. She told me to hide my eyes and count to 10. When I looked up the grapefruit was pink! I ate it and enjoyed it. She kept a box of assorted food coloring in her cupboard. Puffer

I hate it too. One of the many vegetables I'd hide in my napkin so my Mom would think I ate it.
Today though, I'll eat it raw.

Today though, I'll eat it raw. The one I hated was lima beans. I would hide the lima beans one by one under the edge of my plate when my parents weren't looking, but then when my Mom cleared the table there would be a circle of lima beans on the table. Much frustration, Larry

we had bad experiences with sprouts in my house, my dad for some reason was strict with eating sprouts, especially with my oldest brother because the doctor kept having a go at my parents because they said he should be eating more, so my brother would have to sit at the tables for hours sometimes crying until my mum would sneak downstairs and eat them for him, i used to sneak mine to the dog mostly or hide them in mashed potato, my dad always got moody at dinner time, or mornings

I can't remember how I felt about them back then but I must admit I particularly love some of the vegetables often considered grossest - lima beans and b sprouts at the top of the list.

Lima beans are nasty, but broccoli is fabulous, sometimes. This is not very lady like, but I'm with Mark on the problems caused by broccoli. The issue with me though is that there is no "release" of the gas in any way, shape or form. I just curl up in the fetal position and wait out the pain. I can't believe I just admitted that to a room full of strangers You are all now officially my closest friends
