I have got an update on the topic of this thread.
According to the russian Mass Media, there are 4 European countries which oppose Ukraine and Georgia entering NATO. At the same time, one NATO member's veto is enough to stop the process of accepting new members. The current situation is challenging for the US wanting the two countries to join NATO, as it is for Russia, which strongly opposes the NATO approaching our national borders.
There is one more important thing to consider. Gazprom supplies Europe (including Ukraine) with gas, so the more strained relationship with our European partners will defintey lead to economic barriers on the way the gas goes to Europe. I doubt that America cares enough for Europe in this question, however, the US leaders may threaten to harden their backing of NATO members when the question is Russia gas.
It is my opinion.
