I think he is one of the best tenors of all time - he gets a bum rap for being too "mainstream", but I think he help bring a lot of fans to operatic music who would otherwise turn up their noses at it.

When my daughter was about 3, I was listening to Turndot, and when Nessun Dorma was playing, at the climax, she dropped the toy she was playing with and just raised her arms... that's poweruful

That's it right there. He did so much more than anyone else to turn opera into a musical form that everyone could feel they could enjoy.
