Okay
If I don't get an answer on this here, I won't be terribly surprised. I'm just hoping someone here knows about this stuff and can help out hehehe

In my living room stands a relatively old SONY MHC-RX100AV stereo system.

This is one of those old stereos that, instead of being a component system, its all in one with CD tray, tape deck, AM/FM radio, and one AUX input. It was top of the line in its time, but it came with some very nice speakers.

Here's the thing. I have too many things to plug into it for only one AUX port. So I wanted to get rid of the system and get a proper receiver. I am wondering if its technically possible to hook the speakers up from this unit to a proper receiver, to save some $$$. I do want to upgrade to towers and the whole bit but have not the cash to do it properly.

This is the inexpensive receiver i had in mind:

My present thoughts is that the front two speakers can handle the power output because the amp will output to 100watts per channel. My worry is that the rear speakers won't be able to handle the amp, which sucks cause the surround in this system is beautiful.

We never use the CD player or Tape decks in the system. I have a switch box hooked up to the AUX port which has an iPod, PS2, DVD player, and Digital Cable box plugged into it, then it feeds the audio OUT to the stereo. This could also be replaced with a proper receiver.

There are FIVE speakers in total:

FRONT SPEAKERS:
3 way, 3 unit, bass-reflex type, magnetically shielded.
8 ohms
2 cones (15centimetre woofer, 5cm tweeter, and 2cm dome tweeter)
wattage unknown

REAR SPEAKERS (small):
full range bass reflex type, magnetically shielded
16 ohms
1 cone, (8cm)

CENTER SPEAKER (small):
full range bass reflex type, magnetically shielded
8 ohms

The AMP in this stereo is the only thing that gives a hint to the wattage of this system.

Continuous RMS power output
Front speakers are 120+120 watts, (8 ohms at 1 kHz, 5% THD)
Rear speakers have 12.5+12.5 watts (16 ohms at 1 kHz, 5% THD)
Center speaker has 25 watts (8 ohms at 1 kHz, 5% THD)

Any suggestions? Anyone??

Frost,

Yes that receiver will work with your current speakers. My only concern is how the speakers hook up to your current system. If they are bare wire ends you will have no problems. If they connect with a plug of some type you need to strip off the plug and then use the bare wires. More speakers are damaged by low power and the siganl being distorted than by too much power. If you hear your speakers distorting you will know to turn down the volume. If I can help in any way let me know.
