I think another member here could very much agree with how such revealing publically of child sexual abuse is often responded to in Russia. It is sad, that as a culture, I think we are not quite 'up' to acceptance and understanding yet. But it take time, like all other things to do with culture.

It's shocking and insensitive, but I have to say it's not beyond what I would expect to see sometimes. All over the world there is so much public awareness work to be done, and in the interim those who are reaching out will get the heat.

The problem is that so many people's awareness of CSA issues is informed by old myths and misconceptions, or just cabbage-headed confusion. My own Mom, for example, when I told her I am working on a book about the way world cinema presents CSA, told me, "Well, if you ask me I think you should just stay away from pornography" sigh

No, I have never sexually abused children, and if I did it as a child, I would not call myself pedophil.

We were speaking of misconceptions that some men apply to the ther men's sharing their feelings about pedophilia and incest.

I work with a couple of men with whom I talk of CSA. They are amazed that there are so many issues put in place by it. It's not that they are sympathetic to pedophiles, they are absolutely not! They just had never had reason to think about what the consequences where.

It has made me wonder how much ignorance there is, even by people who are anti-pedophilia about the expansive areas of disturbances created in the mind of the victim. How could they know without having experienced it at least vicariously?

Which brings me to the question you're topic brought to mind: Can we really prevent child abuse or can we only hope to sooth the wounds of those of us that are victims? I would hope that making CSA an open topic in the media and on the street would enlighten the world but I'm not very hopeful. The times I've seen it brought up, it is soon droppped because of the discomfort people like you're talking about have with the subject. I guess the only thing to do is to KEEP TALKING and let everyone in the periphery overhear. I am damaged but not ashamed!!!
