Hi all,
To those who think that only men abuse and for those who have been abused within the RC church epidemic, this will both interest and sicken you.

I read the article this morning Taz. It is sickening, as all of these cases are. This woman was a nightmare for countless boys and she will only serve a year in jail; disgusting.

Kudos to the men who were strong enough to bring her into the light. The hell they went through to do so is mind numbing.

ROCK ON.........Trish

This kind of sentencing is ridiculous. In my area there is a Bucknell College professor who pleaded guilty to sexually assualting a 10 year old boy, I got completely livid when I read that he faces a maximum of 5 years in prison!! WTF!!!!!

I would like to ask a question. MS has lots of members all of which I am sure would agree that sentencing laws should be equal no matter the sex of the offender. Is there a way to use this to help change policy, or spread awareness?

Just curious, Christopher

Christopher,

Political activism is a rewarding area to get into, and the results can be extremely important. Laws on the statute of limitations for reporting of CSA offenses have been changed in several states because of this kind of work.

The sentencing guidelines for CSA clearly show that this offense regarded in the legal fleid as "no big deal" - the boy can just "get over it". And the disparity between sentencing of men and women suggests that male offenders are seen as perverts, while if females are involved, hey, the boy "got lucky".

All this is also a good target for activism and efforts to change the laws, but it can be very frustrating. I wouldn't call myself an activist of this kind, but I have written letters on various occasions, and the only time I ever got a response was when I wrote to the Boy Scouts about what had happened to me as a kid. In every other case I was ignored.

I think what would be needed would be an organization at the state level, since that's the level where the laws need to change. Members could then write letters to state legislators in the various districts asking for the required changes, meetings could be requested, and so forth. It would of course be a LOT of work.

I think the reason more of this isn't done is that recovery from CSA takes a long time. A guy just doesn't have the strength to get into this sort of thing, and when he finally does, he will in most cases want to use his resources for himself and his loved ones and for rebuilding his life - who could blame him?

But yes, the observation implicit in your post is crystal-clear: Where else will the advocacy for these changes come from, if not from us?

Much love,
Larry

No apology, no admission of sexual abuse, no remorse. But hey, please forgive me. And this after she missed three hearings and a warrant had to be issued for her arrest. What a piece of work.

This may be leading the thread a bit off target, but I had a friend at work who disclosed to me not long after my own issues came to lite that he was sexually abused in a large, well known boys home by the priests as well as the sisters. Sometimes by both at the same time. Years later when he went back and confronted some of the order that were still working there he encountered complete denial. They knew him but refused to acknowledge their actions had ever taken place.

Unfortunately he was so stymied by the denial he refused to take things any further. I have nothing but respect for him because he is doing the best he knows how to take care of and protect himself, but I so much wish these individuals could be brought to justice for what they did and may continue to do to the boys in that well established facility here in our area.

She should have been indicted a decade ago, with life in jail, not a slap on the wrist!
What? Sort of message is it saying, to other elderly perps!

The one thing that authority lacks is discretion.
They are given rules and guidelines to follow, rather than
make their own decisions,
