Funny how this can relate to a lot of topics other than war. \:\) Good message.

Us and Them
By: Pink Floyd

Us and them
and after all
we're only ordinary men

Me and you
god only knows
its not what we would choose to do

Forward he cried
from the rear
and the front rank died.
The General sat
and the lines on the map
moved from side to side.

Black and blue
and who knows
which is which, and who is who

Up and down
and in the end
it's only 'round and 'round

Haven't you heard
it's a battle of words
and the poster-barer died.
Listen son,
said the man with gun,
there's room for you inside.

Down and out
it can't be helped,
but there's a lot of it about

With, without,
and who'll deny
it's what the fightings all about?

Out of the way
it's a busy day,
I've got things on my mind.
For want of the price
of tea and a slice
the old man died.

Andy,

You're right! Guess that's the mark of a great song and a great songwriter - the song turns out to be relevant far beyond the writer's original intentions.

Much love,
Larry

That's always been one of my favorite PF songs. There was another one that was going through my head today that made me reflect. In fact, just to divert myself I think I'll post my thoughts about it right now.
But ,yeah, I find PF always strikes a strong sympathetic chord with me too.

Animals, is one of my favorites, The wall to me was a masterpiece. The life of a fragmented, frightened, person. imprisoned behind a wall because it is the only safe place to be. At least that is my take on it. Come to think of it I like almost all of their music. \:\)
Definitely headphone music!
I could loose myself in PF for hours.

Sadly, too, war is pretty much the same every time it comes around. So it's easy to parallel songs about it.

As Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) said: "History never repeats itself, but it often rhymes."

Back in high school, I could not listen to PF without bawling my eyes out. There was something about this entire album that would tap directly into raw emotion and nightmare-ish memories.

Thus, I refused to listen to ANY Floyd again until this past year. Anyone hear of such a thing before?

yeah, Heart "Dreamboat Annie", Led Zeppelin "Houses of The Holy ", and Aerosmith - anything. All trigger really negative emotional responses from me so to this day I don't listen to them. With the exception of the song Dreamboat Annie which is one of the only ones that do not relate to the abuse.
Thanks for bringing this up because I have been thinking about all the music I don't listen to anymore and most of it is from the same years of my abuse.
but the ones mentioned above have had a significant impact on my mental state of mind since they were the ones listened to by my abusers, over and over again.

It sounds like PF was until a big trigger for you. Their music threatened to take you to a place you weren't ready to visit yet, so you would feel "endangered", perhaps (right word?), at the idea of listening to them.

It's amazing all the ways a boy's mind finds to give him the minimal protection he needs, then and even later on as an adult.

Much love,
Larry
