A winters day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Ive built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Dont talk of love,
But Ive heard the words before;
Its sleeping in my memory.
I wont disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Chris,

I was around 10 years old I think when that song first was released. I knew it by heart but never paid attention to the words till 10 years later. I knew then that I was that rock, that island, I didn't know why, but I knew. It wasn't till late 2003 that it I understood. At that point I began to listen to the words of some other S&G songs. I listened and shed a lot of tears. Those two men played a big part in my early healing whether they knew it or not.

Thanks for sharing the words here.

Lots of love,

John

Chris,

I remember that one vividly; in a way it was a kind of anthem for me during some very dark times. Paul Simon has got to be one of the greatest American poets/songwriters of all time.

Much love,
Larry

My english teacher was playing the song in class. It was the first time i had ever listened to Simon and Garfunkel. The lyrics really hit me. i thought it was a pretty powerful song.

I have not thought about Simon and Garfunkel in years.... I am a rock, I am an island described me to a 'T' as a troubled teenager and young adult. That song gave me strength to endure. Also, Bridge Over Troubled Water, helped a mixed up kid cope and instilled in me a sense of hope when I would feel lost and hopeless.

Their music is still very powerful even today. Im going to have to dig out those old 8 tracks!!!! \:\) (or maybe I should just download them onto my Ipod.)(I need to get one.)

I saw Simon and Garfunkel in 1968, I think. They did an amazing concert at my university and as you say, it was a powerful experience.

If you haven't heard them before, hey, have a listen to one of their "greatest hits" CDs. Some of my favorite songs of theirs are "The Boxer", "Homeward Bound", "Bridge over Troubled Water", and "Sound of Silence". All those - and many more - will surely speak to you as a survivor.

Much love,
Larry

I love that one too, i had simon and garfunkels stuff on tape (well it was my dads) and i always used to listen to that but now i've got a CD too, i don't bother with i-pods or mp3's because i don't want to be one of these people that have got ear-phones in their ears all day long, i think that hinders something important in the progression of the human mind in my opinion

but yeah, that song rocks!
