Those are great ones. One I didn't see there is a great one by Churchill, who was drunk at the pub (I forget its name) right in front of the House of Commons on the Thames. A woman came by him and was offended and said, "You, sir, are DRUNK!" Churchill replied, "Yes, and you, Madam, are ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober."

Hee hee! yeah, "not as bad as it sounds" was referring to Wagner... i guess "Sturm und Drang" wasn't his thing...
I had a book long ago called "The Book Of Famous Insults" which contained many of these. The "A Curmudgeon's Book Of..." series is very much along the same lines.
