It's not that I'm not a religious person....it's that I consider the concept of religion to be absurd. If people want to believe in fairy tales, I'm fine with that. I just have a hard time stomaching the fact that people need such a fairy tale in order to be kind to one another.

I guess I just have a hard time with Christianity being shoved down my throat this time of year.

You're not having "Christianity" shoved down your throat. You are having commercialism, with a slight touch of Christianity, shoved down your throat. People have somehow managed to attach the birth of Christ to a very commercial time of the year. But that is one single concept from a whole new-testament-full of concepts.

Christmas songs themselves come in variety. Silent Night is actually a hymn, while Jingle Bells is a pretty commercial tune with no reference to any bible concept whatsoever. The Christmas tree, with its nice lights and stunning decor, is no bible concept. It is, in fact, pagan in origin. Frankly, it amazes me how much this commercial holiday is attached to anything even remotely considered Christian.

I suppose it goes without saying, then, that I had my yearly fight with my father the other day because I refuse to attend midnight mass with him on Christmas Eve.

With the addition of that information, I can see why you said what you said. Thank you.

Bryan,

Your Father needs to get a life, frankly. Any Christian who would fight with their grown child about going to church (as if that will somehow get them "saved") is not a Christian at all, and frankly is of the opposite persuasion whether they admit it or no. It's as simple as that. Sorry if that sounds callous, but that's the way I see it.

Aren't all holidays for the group that choses to celebrate them?
I know the social pressure is as strong as peer pressure but it really comes down to choice. If you celebrate the solstice you do so with like minded people if you celebrate Christmas, you do it with like minded people. Kwanza and chanukka are not holidays that I celebrate but I sure don't mind that someone else does.
Maybe it's the pressure to join in something that you don't want to be involved in that you are uncomfortable with, hmmm that sounds familiar!
