I thought of a really good (I think so) question from another post in which I was previewing something for a friend that I knew would be triggering.

Triggering environments is something we all have to face. What if before hand you knew the thing that you had to or was going to do would be potentially
triggering. We all have to do this at some time.

so my question is--How do you mentally prepare yourself for that situation?!??
Or how do you just prepare for it in general???

Thanks for this question, Logan,

First of all, I do expect strong feelings. That is good for me.

Logan,

If I know that a situation will be triggering, it helps a great deal. Triggers are the most difficult when they are unexpected.

However, at the same time, the hardest triggers are the ones that don't affect me until much later.

Logan,

What helps me is to keep telling myself that what is being triggered is a bunch of bad feelings from a long time ago. I know I have to work on these feelings, but I don't have to accept that they're true. I try to tell myself that the past cannot hurt me; it's over and gone.

That doesn't mean I can turn off the trigger like turning out the lights, but it does help me to ride the thing through to the end without reacting in a way that will harm me or make me feel bad about myself now, in the present.

Hope this helps.

Much love,
Larry
