Hi guys, I'm still lurking.

http://www.camh.net/Research/Research_publications/Newsletter/child_pornography_pedophilia.html

http://www.camh.net/News_events/News_rel...isposition.html

http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/November2007/28/c4917.html

Three interesting links. Three different 'theories' from the same place about the possible 'causes or reasons' behind pedophilia.

Are these guys credible? or are they quacks hedging their bets?

I'm interested to know if any of the professionals here can enlighten me.

Thanks
Dave

I'm not a professional, but...

The first article points out something that seems to be common sense to me, but is probably quite a drastic reversal of what most professionals and society in general actually believe. People who actually offend against children are probably more in it for the power than anything else. The sex is a secondary benefit from exerting that power. Meanwhile, someone who actually gets off on child pornography is probably more predisposed sexually toward the child. I suspect that a vast majority of people who view child porn never actually offend against a child, and therefore never get caught. Not only does this potentially skew this results of this study quite significantly, but it also goes a long way towards proving the quite controversial belief that it is possible to care for a child and be attracted sexually to that child as well. I truly believe that anyone who really cares for a child would not actually act out sexually against a child, so it only makes sense to me that the people who tend to view child porn as a substitute would naturally be more inclined to be more sexually predisposed towards children. However, it is when a person who is viewing child porn has a hard time differentiating between right and wrong when we come up with a serious issue. These are the people who offend, and they tend to get caught. Simply put, it is impossible to study the ones who don't get caught.

The second article cites a study that I believe has been cited on this site before. I'm not really sure what to make of this study either. Sure, maybe a link has been found, but I'd like to see a larger sample size. Also, I'd like to know exactly how this helps us. What are we being told? Does this do anything to help us identify pedophiles? And, if true pedophiles tend to not get caught, as the first study suggests, then what are we accomplishing?

The third study only used 127 men as subjects, and I hardly put any weight at all into a study where statistical variance can have more of an impact than actual data.

So....the question is...if it turns out that pedophilia is actually hard-wired into the brain...what do we do then?

Furthermore, it sounds to me like the people we REALLY need to be concerned about are the people who actually offend, and the first study suggests that most of these people aren't true pedophiles anyway (and I believe that).

This makes for some interesting discussion.

Bryan

Couldn't get the second article to load. last one is all hypothesis, Great that they are working on this but its just fodder for the media right now. Reminded me of clinical trials for medication.
I want to see words like Have, does, will, and not might, could, suggests. Another thing is that my abusers were not short left handed people with low IQs.
The only thing that was interesting is the MRI part which they show no pictures of. Although I would like to see the MRIs comparing the brains.
peace
