I dont want to sound harsh but, Thease fires happen every year and they are a problem only because the brush and fuel for the fires has ben alowed to acumulatein the hills . People build holmes in thease areas where the fires are a natural part or the egosystem . They deed to build fire breaks around there houses and remove flamible brush from the aria . I am saying this as a former USFS Firefighter and a former Californian

Uh, its a little more complicated than that. My own neighborhood is a hundred years old. Fire is definitely a fact of life here, but overzealous development in fire-prone areas is not the sole problem.
Not to sound harsh either but I am getting sick of everyone looking for *someone* to blame. (Not that that is what you were doing OM).....from Bush, to Schwarzenegger, to Malibu celebrities, to smokers, and no sh*t - one jerk even proposed terrorism.
PS. Wherever you all are, please breathe for me -- its almost impossible to do here. Ugh.

Hi,
Look, I lived in California more than three decades before moving here. Between fires and mudslides, someone's always passing blame around. TW, I'm thankful you and yours are still okay, and I know the breathing and the air both suck right now. I've been close enough to fires myself to have an idea how bad it can be (less than a mile away from Cazadero fire in 1978, I think, and a few miles from the one in the Berkeley hills sometime in the early 80s). Stay calm, and best wishes.
Ed
