I just bought a book on eBay that I thought you should all know about, if you don't already. It's by Gonn Iggulden and the title is The Dangerous Book for Boys. The authors' introduction says they wrote it because boyhood is all about curiosity, and oh man, what an amazing book they put together as a result.

It has short chapters on a million cool and totally unrelated topics: five knows every boy should know, skipping stones, first aid, cloud formations, how to shave, girls, astronomy, the origin of words, marbles, pirates, cloud formations, insects, building a treehouse, adventure stories, famous battles, catapults, etc. And NOTHING about TV, iPod, Facebook, the Internet... Just interesting things to know and get creative about.

It's just so totally cool for any boy...of any age. I wish I had had this when I was 14, but okay, 58 will do. ;\) Excuse me - got to go find out how to do some coin tricks.

Much love,
Larry

Dave,

Again...those are not the words in the poem, but what I read as I read it.

If there were truly a magic wand and if I could wave it, ask for one wish. It would be to do away with what it means to be a man. Because there are times and have been times when to walk when not able and to appear to be unafraid has cost me my humanity. When sucess carries the price of denying or minimizing what I feel.

You are so right. That Kipling poem of course comes from 19th century Victorian England, when fathers of the middle and upper class thought their task was to sons who would march off to expand and protect the Empire. I remember reading If as a catalog of everything I wasn't. If I had a young teenager son now, I would tell him yes, read the poem - it's very inspiring. But don't measure yourself by it.

Thanks for getting me to revisit this one - memories from a long time ago.

Much love,
Larry

So when we meet in New York we'll go to the Hudson and skip stones. If you beat me you get an "honorary boy" certificate. ;\)

Much practicing,
Larry
