Guitars, rock music, horror films, films with subtitles (sometimes if I have a bottle of wine, I have to watch them again), wine, growing cactii and other plants, decorating (it doesn't usually all get finished at the first attempt), reading, talking to people, not talking to people, breathing, doing good things for other people.

Best wishes ...Rik

Writing
Singing and Songwriting (guitar, piano, harmonica) I used to play the local coffee club circuit until I let drugs take over my life. My goal is to be back at that within a year, though I'm kind of getting sidetracked by this whole CSA thing.

The songwriting obviously leads to poetry.

Okay...I'm a terrible poet, but my songs need lyrics, don't they?

I also like to read.
I used to be a heavy video gamer, but not much since this whole CSA thing came up. Since then, I don't have the desire to play video games much anymore. It seems like I just don't have the time, and they don't seem to be very fulfilling.

I play blues guitar too, but I don't consider it a "hobby", for the same reason that one wouldn't consider "drinking water" a hobby...

But anyway. All these people like hiking, but I'm the only one who likes backpacking. Does that mean if we ever go out as a group, I'm the one who has to carry everything?

You are right Larry, lots of pickers and pluckers here huh!
I play mostly older classic rock and southern rock, and while I really enjoy listening to the Blues, I'm not very good at playing them. I'm not too good at lead or solo's, mostly back up to my singing.

And melliferal, don't worry, I pack very lightly!

There are many common threads, in this "thread"

Best wishes and warmest regards,
Scott

I used to sing lead in a metal garage band in high school
I've also played the trumpet, piano and flute...
About to get an acustic guitar for my b-day in a couple of
days.. \:\)

Just bought one for my oldest son a couple of weeks ago...
he used to play the violin, and very well I must say he amazed
me at how fast he picked it up....

And if we do go backpacking I'll help "carry the burden"...;)

*puts hand up*... I play guitar from time to time. I used to lead worship in church with it but now I just play songs from my music collection that have meaning to me.

I have an acoustic Aria guitar. Very nice sound out of it. My brother has 3 guitars now one of them he inherited from my grandfather its a very old and valuable Martin that was played first by a celebrity of some sort waaaaay back in the day(name escapes me). The celebrity needed a guitar for the show and a guitar store in my grandfather's town loaned it to him for the show. My gramps went in there the following day and bought it. It narrowly escaped a house fire in 2001. Lots of history in that guitar.

my other hobbies include fixing & repairing computers, graphic design, database programming, photography, reading, watching movies, and listening to music.

I'm mostly a folk singer, picked up the ol' guit-fiddle to have a chance to get into a band. I could never get the band thing to work out, so I tried the Bob Dylan thing.

A great man once told me, "all you need is three chords and the truth." Perhaps the reason why I didn't make it as a musician the first time around is because I didn't have the truth....

A good friend asked me about three years ago if I would spend some time showing her son how to play. If I had any idea how much that was going to change my life, I'd have said, "no".

Here I am today, afraid that he is going to learn too fast. Afraid that the time will come when I'm not able to teach him anything new. Does it sound wierd? I don't want to lose our one hour a week together. The result? I've again begun to study the instrument myself. I've even started to learn to play piano because music theory is so much easier on a keyboard.

I guess the coffeeshops can wait for now.

truth, its just that we buried it a long time ago...

Wow - thanks for the memory of this one. I don't know where you heard this famous phrase, but the version I remember is Bono's line "All I got is a red guitar, three chords and the truth" from U2's cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".

The blues is mostly like that: 12 bars, three chords, and the truth. \:\)

It seems like the only thing that i've been doing lately is acting. Other things have kind of fallen to the wayside of late. There are a lot of things that I want to learn but I can't seem to focus or find the courage/confidence. Sometimes it seems too late. Sometimes I don't think that I deserve it.

I've been writing about stuff from childhood and taking it into my counseling. No poetry-just what happened.

Yeah Larry, that was me. Gershwin was such a genius, in his concertos' anyway (his show tunes don't interest me, but that's how he paid the bills.) The complexity and nuance in his music is awsome, he can make you think you're hearing multiple melody lines that arent' even there...

I have a recording of American in Paris that is a piano solo by George himself. The piece was written as a symphony, but he managed to capture all of the instumental voices using only the piano. Man, it is fantastic!

As an aside, you know how some people play 'air guitar'? I play 'air piano' to gershwin. When my husband wants a backrub, I turn down the lights, put on Concerto in F and play it on his back... He says it's the best backrub he's ever had! And I have a good time too!

Have a great day!

Ric

Ric,

Oh yeah! I know ALL about air guitar, though we didn't call it that back then!!! I was a teenager when Hendrix was around! rofl I wish I had video footage of my best moments. How embarrassing, but my kids would laugh themselves senseless I bet.

Hey, do you know of a good solo piano performance of the Rhapsody in Blue? Just piano. The musical director at the American Academy in Rome told me in 2000 that a great score had just been edited and published, and that's what he played. I'm wondering if there's a version of it on CD - must be by now, but all I see are performances with orchestra.

Much love,
Larry

I used to play drums in a band called Sidewinder, then Zandar Zan for quite a few years. I've still got the kit in a cupboard at the top of my stairs. Haven't played it for some time - it's too big to set up in the house: Double bass drums, 2 x floor toms, 4 x mounted toms, snare drums and loads of cymbals and a cow bell. I used to play in a thrash style, before it was invented - I think I just used to like to hit the hell out of them as it got rid of all my pent up energy - wonder where that came from!?

Somedays I used to have a laugh if we were playing a gig - some guitarists have such big ego's, so if they pissed me off with their vanity, I used to play fast songs even faster and laugh as they tried to keep up. They'd usually get their own back, by announcing a slow song next & then laugh at me trying to slow down and do a slow beat.

I'm quite proud of some of the photographs - think early Lemmy, only with longer hair. I rmember the day we played Sunderland Mayfair! It had a revolving stage, where you set up the gear, and the audience couldn't see you. Once you started the set, the stage revolved so that you were then facing the audience. It was the biggest crowd we had played to at that point (about 600). We started up with Van Halen's Ain't Talking About Love (though we played mostly our own stuff). One of my legs developed a twitch and started hammering the bass drunm at twice normal speed. It improved the song, and they asked me to play it like that all the time afterwards. Drums are a great way of getting rid of stress. They are also better than a gym work out if you play fast rock - I had an eight pack then, now it's more of a barrel!

My guitar style is usually influenced by how much red wine I've consumed. One song I do, is quite mournful to start of, like remote church bells in one of those grinding western cowboy films. As it progresses, the mood lifts and changes - it can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours, just depends upon my frame of mind.

My other hobbies are collecting Mexican style items. It started with a distressed pine sideboard. People have asked me, 'Why Mexican'. The only answer I have, is that when I was very young (pre-abuse), we had a vase in the house (ringtons tea)that had a picture of a mexican boy and a donkey on it. I always used to wonder about where the boy lived, and if it was nearby! He just looked so happy. There were also donkeys near to where I lived, and I used to go and feed them carrots with my Grandfather (happy times). Maybe I'm trying to find that happiness in my purchases!? You can sometimes find these vases on e-bay! Think I will have to buy one! Full circle!

I have bought Day of the Dead Mariachi Band tin ornaments, day of the dead wine glasses, Mexican national anthem poster from 1954 (in Spanish), various vintage postcards, a Mexican silver scorpion spoon and various other items.

Best wishes ...Rik
