Cool thread Mark. Here's a question you guys might be able to answer. When and where did "Pride" days and parades originate? Was it any particular occasion, or just someone's idea and it caught on?

Much love,
Larry

Larry,

Pride began as a response to the NYC police, who would raid a bar just because it was a gay bar. Many bar owners would pay off the local cops to leave them alone.

A bar called "Stonewalls" (I think) was paying protection money, but in 1969 (ironic huh...69 ) the police raided them anyway. The gay community rallied and actually started a riot.

The "Stonewall Riots" became the first step in the equality movement. It made national news and many gay leaders started to use this event as the rallying point for the equal rights movement.

Pride was adopted to celebrate the anniversary of this riot.

Just to share some history.

Luv ya,
Carl

Larry,

Juts thought I would share a little more.

On Friday evening, June 27, 1969, the New York City tactical police force raided a popular Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. Raids were not unusual in 1969; in fact, they were conducted regularly without much resistance. However, that night the street erupted into violent protest as the crowds in the bar fought back. The backlash and several nights of protest that followed have come to be known as the Stonewall Riots.

Prior to that summer there was little public expression of the lives and experiences of gays and lesbians. The Stonewall Riots marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement that has transformed the oppression of gays and lesbians into calls for pride and action. In the past twenty-five years we have all been witness to an astonishing flowering of gay culture that has changed this country and beyond, forever.

Carl

Carl,

Thanks for the information. I remember the Stonewall riots but I didn't know the pride celebrations were connected with that. I didn't know the situation in NYC and elsewhere either.

Much love,
Larry
