Our friend and MS member Bobby gave me permission last December to adapt one of his poems to music. I just got my voice completely back after a bout with laryngitis, and here is what came of it Friday night. I wrote the music, played and sang it. It's amateur, but it was fun to do. The song is nothing without Bobby's wonderful words. Thank you Eddie for hosting the file. I think the words genuinely express how many of us feel about having this valuable place to come and talk. It's called "My Friends."

http://schhs.homestead.com/files/MyFriends_New.wma

You are my friends, you know
The only ones I've got
The only ones who know the way I think
The way I cry
The things I've done that no one else can know
And what he did to me
You know that, too

You know my child
And he looks up to you
And it was you who taught him not all men were bad
And some could love him
Just as he was
And some days you would take him in your arms
And let him cry himself to sleep

I know you're here
I count on it
I worry sometimes, sure
That you have gone away
Or have forgotten who I am

Thank you for not turning me away
For taking me in
For accepting me
No matter how that me may change from day to day
You matter, don't you know?
You matter to another human being
Keep him from giving up sometimes

I know you're here
I count on it
I worry sometimes, sure
That you have gone away
Or have forgotten who I am

I can only really echo what others have said; it's wonderfully emotive, and I'm glad you've shared it with us.

More please!

I had a shitty day and was the lowest I've been in a very long time. I was just wandering through the MS site tonight, came to this one and said: hmm. And my tears washed away some of the pain. Thanks you two wonderful guys.

I dunno...I think Andy has a better voice than Phil Collins.

Don't get me wrong...I think Collins is an awesome songwriter with a good voice....

BJK,

I wouldn't say my voice is better than Phil's, but I appreciate the thought.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have posted in other forums that I attended the Alta Weekend of Recovery. One of the components of our meetings together included select pieces of music played over a stereo system. I talked to one of the facilitators about the song on this link, and was pleased to find out it would be included in the next morning's music selections. I felt privileged that the other men had the chance to hear it.

Bobby and Andy
Thank you so much for such a beautiful song. I heard it first at ALTA this past weekend and what a great song. It really touch my heart and brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much.
I am working on one myself. I wrote it on the plane trip back home. I hope I can post it some day!
Thank you to both of you! Keep singing and writing and making music for all the world.

Thank you Andy and Bobby. There is something in there for all of us. As a survivor, the words resonate with me.I definitely feel accepted and understood when I am at this site.It also made me think of some wonderful moments in my therapy when I finally felt trust and love. I think survivors who finally reach that point where they feel accepted, believed and supported begin to feel trust and love. At least that is true for me. I especially like the line "thank you for not turning me away". It has so much power.

Whenever I feel weak or vulnerable, you guys always manage to inspire me.
Peace,
Dan
