Victor/Victoria

if you want to see who I am a bit... this is my all time fav movie

it made me secretly feel ok about who I am.

I love it, to tears.

I hope all my friends would watch it. I don't make requests too often.

(((hugs))))

Love,

Mark

Mark, I have watched Vitor/Victoria so many times. I first saw it when my wife and I were dating... We started calling each other POOKIE after Leslie Ann Warren says it to James Garner. I think it is one of the sweetest movies ever - it shows tolerance and what people will do for the one's they love, gay or straight.

Great pick... I think I'll rent it again this weekend

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is another big one for me! Another is Arthur... But if you want a movie full of great quotes, "Steel Magnolias" or "Moonstruck" are great sources!

I don't have a favorite movie... I have several to match each mood....

Most poweful movie? I think Elephant Man or Brokeback Mountain...

Stupidest? Dumb and Dumber... I laughed my butt off.

Scariest? Wait Until Dark (I saw it in sixth grade... )I thought my heart burst when he jumped at her with the knife!

The Movie I wath every year? TO Kill a Mockingbird and Shawshank Redemption.

I could go on for hours!

Mark,

I KNEW it would be Victor/Victoria!!!!!!!!!!! \:\) That isn't necessarily my favorite, but it sure is a classic. I had lost track of Robert Preston since childhood, when he absolutely mesmerized me as Harold Hill in "The Music Man". Then suddenly there he is in that magnificent role in VV. He absolutely stole the show. What a great performance. I watch it all over again every time it comes back on the TV.

Much love,
Larry

two of my favourite lines from the birdcage:

"Avecdor, I'm dying! I'm dying!"

Avecdor to Alby "Oh honey, it's gonna pass..."

Senator "I'm a wreck"

Avecdor "Have a drink"

Senator "But I don't drink"

Avecdor "Yeah, but now's the time to start to pretend..."

My classic moments from "The Birdcage":

1. Alby: "Ohhhhh, I pierced the toast!!!!!!!!!!"

2. The pirin tablets.

3. Alby trying to learn to walk like John Wayne.

4. "I have only one mother. This is my mother."

5. Alby (walking into the room in a business suit, but flamingo pink socks): "One does want a hint of color."

6. "Subtract! Don't add. Just subtract."

I went out for the first time last night - and saw a few drag queens

at the paramount club - they were drawing attention to their show.

one - had such a Rita Hayworth quality - aka Gilda -

long gown - fur coat - sparkles - hair to match -

I caught her looking at me - and she tossed her head away -

it was really sweet - nearly like Doris Day in the 50s

but also a twinge of lonely - she was sitting there alone

she had a REALLY MALE VOICE - and a very hairy chest -

so - not only was it an anything goes fun place -

it drew me in - I sat for a bit - and in walked a big towering drag queen with a boofant (spelling)

she had a drink - and as she entered drew a breath closed her eyes and just yelled

Alright! (like I am here) and sort of took the room over - and a bunch of us chuckled ---

reminded me of Joan Rivers -----"Enter the room talking....."

i still think my favourite drag moment was in Toronto

when a very overweight singer - had center stage - and

her heel broke - unintentionally - and she fell with a boom

on his butt -

and quickly all the characters -
shifted to make the scene work

howls of laughter - including theirs... \:\)

Love it in "The Birdcage" when the two characters are practicing acting straight...

Alby: "What about those Dolphins!!!"

Alby impersonating John Wayne is great....the comments are better:
"I never realized John Wayne walked like that"

OMG! My ALL time favorite serious movie!!! I've owned it for years.

Is there some reason we CSA kids like that so much? DannyM listed it too.

And I met Robert Duval once at the VIP lounge at the Munich Airport (1986)...I only talked to him about this movie. He said it was special to him too.

Robbie, I think there are several reasons CSA survivors can identify with "To Kill A Mockingbird" so much. The whole premise of the book and later movie is that something whose sole purpose is to give joy is thoughtlessly killed. When looked at from the point of view of a CSA survivor, we see the parallels with our own childhood experience - we were a gift from God to give joy, yet we had our innocence killed.

Additionally, we see in Scout, Jem, and Dill, children who are having to learn about the ugliness of the world all too soon in their young lives. Again, the parallels with our own CSA experience is obvious.

Eddie, I agree that To Kill a Mockingbird follows the themes you discussed, but also it is also a beautiful story about kids learning not only the injustices of the world, but learning about tolerance - to "walk around in another man's skin" as Atticus puts it.

Plus it is beautifully directed, acted and anything with Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall has got to be good!

Where the Red Fern Grows - ah, great book and movie - I work in a school and walked into a class where the teacher was reading it aloud. I triggered right there because my perp took me to that movie when I was 11 or 12 - he could drive. I calmed myself and said, "That bastard can't take this story away for me"

I agree, Dan. My favorites scenes from the book and movie don't have to do with the injustices and ugliness of the world. They have to do with the innocence of childhood. I think my favorites scene is probably when Scout, Jem, and Dill run up to the mob outside the jail, and Scout begins talking to Mr. Cunningham about his son, Walter. It shows how still innocent she is to what is going on around her, and illustrates to them all how they will have to continue living with each other. Beautiful.

YES!!! "Hey Mr. Cunningham" - I always thought those were the best child actors ever!

I'm having my daughter read it now, and she's loving it.

Thanks,

Mark, I read the Thorn Birds, too, and watched the mini-series. Great book!

And back in the early 1980s when I was working the night shift, I figured out that 2:00pm on ABC was an interesting soap about the trial and tribulations of Luke, Laura, Scotty, the Quartermains, etc. No, you're not alone!

"Shawshank" and "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" was a hoot. My ex-wife is from Australia, Land of OZ, but now in Vancouver. She dsidn't think it odd at all. Hmm.

I'd watch Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins anytime.

Froggy is alive he thinks. Went to pluto for the weekend and things just have not been the same.

I think this is what ultimately affected me most about the book too - the element of a child's innocence. It just pours off of every page.

Much love,

and on my lunatic sense of humour side-

I loved "Toonces the Driving Cat" on Saturday Night Live.

He was the suicidal puppet Cat Taxi Driver - who would drive the celebrities over the cliff in his taxi
- and get this crazed screaming cat face -

the celebrities - would be talkign and then scream - Toonces!?

what are you doing!????!!?

lol it was so weird -
surreal -

strange

Brian,

I went back to see The Breakfast Club several times before it left theaters. Yes - awesome!

Mark - I loved Toonces, too! He was too cool. I think my favorites skit was when Toonces was driving Mrs. Daisy. Hysterical.

MEOW!

I haven't followed this post for a few days, so sorry to go back a bit, but I have a General Hospital Story.

I was a freshman in college when GH was all the rage. I didn't got too into it, but I saw a few episodes and I had some friends that were hooked. So one day, I'm in a chemistry class. It's freshman chemistry and it is in a huge lecture hall. 600 studenst maybe. and at 12:45, about 4/5 of the class gets up and leaves en mass. i asked someone what was going on and she wispered, "It's luke and Laura's wedding"

Man, I sooooo remember "The Little Engine That Could". As I more or less collapsed emotionally I withdrew from so many things and tried to back off them by saying, "I can't". My Mom always reminded me of all the times she had read this book to me. It really is a treasure, right up there with "The Roly Poly Puppy", "The Tawny Scrawny Lion", "The Little Red Hen", etc.

Much love,
Larry

My favorite all time movie is "Field of Dreams" The one with Kevin Costner. The best part of the movie is when Kevin looks at the baseball dude and says "dad, how about a catch?". I have seen that movie like 10 times and it makes me cry every time. That movie is a kind of catharsis for guys who want to connect with their fathers, but cannot because their dads are dead

i was just about to do a comedic entry here -

i will - but it's not as funny -

when i 'came out' into West Hollywood -

the Sixth Sense had recently been in theatres (relatively speaking)

I was chatting to someone - and I saw a straight couple go by ....

i seized. "..... I see straight people.."

jk lol

- it was silliness of gay blalalaa

I have used a variation on that many times "I see dumb people"
I liked the Sixth Sense very much

Mark,

I have to say, this may be the dumbest place to make my first comment, but here I go.

My favorite movies are "Breakfast Club" and "Shawshank Redemption". Both of these movies feature unexpected friendships, and for that reason, they top my list.

I agree with you Scout, at least where "Shawshank redemption" is concerned stunning ending, and great acting by some top notch actors.

BTW, Welcome to MaleSurvivor. There is not dumb place to make your first post, Friend. The place you made it was perfect!

John

Scoutvictim,

I just want to add a word of welcome to Male Survivor. Your post wasn't dumb at all and I'm glad you found us. I am another victim of abuse in Scouting, by the way, in case you ever need to talk about things. PM me any time.

Much love,
Larry
