Children who are not abused, or otherwise assualted by violence or injustice are capable of freely expressing all their feelings. In doing so they naturally develop the skills necessary to experience intimacy in healthy ways. They also learn how to establish the boundaries they need that will allow them to feel safe when they go out into the world. We never got to understand what it means to feel safe. We never got to see life without the filtering shades of our abuse blocking out part of the sunlight. While we heard the mirthful laughter of other children on the playground, somehow we knew we could not share in their innocent joy.
