It isn't necessary to have a therapist if what you want is a peer support group. Support groups are not group therapy, per se, but are centered around mutual support and experience. They are also free (as far as a fee goes).

Group therapy is something completely different. A therapist facilitates the group (opening the group with a focus, keeping the group on track, etc.) and usually charges a fee for each week. The hard part is finding a therapist who really understands the issues male survivors deal with. I've only found a handful in the SF Bay Area, and I would imagine the scarcity would be similar in NYC. Ken Singer might have a recommendation, however, if this is the route you choose to take.

I'm on Long Island (Suffolk); tough to get to NYC but I'm listening to what you can get organized.

I'd like to know how that goes. I've thought about that, although I don't have a therapist. I'm trying to work everything out on my own.

I have started a peer group myself and have over 3 years experience with it. It is a wonderful thing to do. I would be happy to help you get this going.
