Rob,

I like it. All of Misplaced Childhood is for survivors.

I'm proud to own my heart!

Thanks,

Joe

I actually don't know many of those Rob, but music has really helped me get through for sure. Some you might know of: digging In The Dirt - Peter Gabriel; The Fall - Ministry. You do mean 'the' Ministry - ie: Pslam 69, etc...? I used to find that stuff too offensive when I was a Christian so I got into Christian Industrial like Under Midnight.

Also I used to listen to lots of Pink Floyd, and now and then I'll get The Wall DVD out, I find that really therapeutic.

Otherwise it's mostly instrumentals these days for me. I used to like a christian local Hardcore band called Callous too, I found their stuff was really cathartic.

Ash,

I was actually a punk-rock bass player in the 80s. These days I require a message that speaks to my stasis in the lyrics. If I'm lucky i has a good base-line too.

I had to stop listening to P Floyd in the early 80s as it drove me over the edge to near suicide. That...and Dark Side of the Moon.

I would STRONGLY suggest you give a listen to TRUST by Billy Bragg.

I've never met an ex-Christian before. That is an ex-evangelical Christian. Maybe sometime you can tell me about how that plays-out in your life. I DO know that I'm a pretty lousy witness right now. My brain to too full of snakes.

I WILL give those titles a listen. Thanks man.

Stasis: I had to look that one up, that's a good word, it describes how I feel creatively: stoppage, no flow. I will check out some Billy Bragg, I saw him interviewd once too and he is an awesome guy. Speaking of punk rock bass players, I met the bassist from The Birthday Party once: he teaches graphic design now. What kind of gear did you used to play Rob? Do you still play? My step dad is a christian and he's just started learning on a Warwick 5 string, great sounding basses.

Don't beat youself you too much. I used to always be so conscientious about being a good witness too, but you're here and people see the real you, and that's the best witness you can be. To maintain faith in the situation you're in does more than anything else to testify what you stand for and who you are.

I just answered that Q for another friend here. Here's what I said:

I use to own a Steinberger XL and a GL. Back in the old days when I had money and a mohawk. I played in a punk band called the 8-balls. I powered mostly off an Accoustic 400 head or 2, daisy chained...sometimes a Marshall head too. I pumped some big-ass Carvin Cabs with JBL speakers that I had custom built in Germany.

The bad old days for Rob. Loved the music...loved playing (still do)...I can just leave all other aspects of THAT life behind thank you very much. Came out of that with some bad addicitons, bad behavior. Of course, we know the roots of that.

Ended it all when I moved to Germany and the band went to NYC...I heard they made a good bunch of $$$ in the after-hours bars.

Playing still soothes my soul. I can really escape laying down some bass lines. My son got my old Boss Drum machine going again. I can't remember how to program it though. I now use a Steinberger knock-off. No money any more for these things.

I sure wish I had that guitar with me tonight. My T wants me to check myself in. I dont want to.

It's a kick-arse song innit! And some others worth checking are Baby Bird, esp: Take Me Back, that's pretty intense.

There's a great Callous song, I can't find it on the web anymore, if I do I'll put a link up. It's a Christian Hardcore Punk song where the singer (also the drummer) screams:

I am all alone!
Everything's gone wrong!
I am weak!
But in my weakness
You are stroooooonggg!!!
(huge riffage kicks in with awesome drumming - he used to be the drummer for Mortification).

Anyway, here's their myspace, they've changed their sound, I prefer their old stuff, but you might find something you like:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=31009764

Sounds like an awesome bass rig, I was over at Ned Steinberg's site ogling his new and very expensive bass range the other day. I'd like to learn one day, but like you it's a money thing. I was actually contemplating an Ashbury or a Bogdan Box, but probably not.

Wait:

Here's the homepage:

http://threetimesfire.blackguild.com/home.html

I found it! (sorry for dodgy quality though)

Damn Rob,

I thought you were cool before, the I see you put Marillion, Chris Rea, and Billy Bragg on your play list. You are way too cool for me.

I'm an ex-frustrated drummer, so a lot of my picks are rhythym based. (When I played a lot my dream was to be a perfect blend of Neil Peart and Keith Moon).

Some picks from my list

Quadrophnia - The whole damn album. It's The Who's masterpiece.

Bravado - Rush

Break It Down Again - Tears For Fears

The Road To Hell - Chris Rea

Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis

Force Ten - Rush

Gimmie Shelter - The Stones

Grey Street - Dave Matthews Band

Morning Is Broken -- Lloyd Cole

Miami - Counting Crows

Midwife - Peter Mulvey

I could go on and on and on...

That's aiming pretty damn high. I'd settle for being maybe the second or third best drummer in the world. I was just thinking that Pert is into Ayn Rand while Moon was into everything, there might be some internal conflict if you made a Frankendrummer out of them. "Must be Herioc Ideal! Must take drugs! HA!

You know it's funny, I never let myself think too much about the possible Moon/Peart frankenmonster. And ever since I heard Carter Buford play for DMB I realized that someone else managed to do a much better job of it than I ever could. That guy is sick!

Tartugas,

I see by the time stamp that yesterday as you posted your play list, I was posting this verse of "Bravado" on another site.

Quote:
And if the music stops
There's only the sound of the rain
All the hope and glory
All the sacrifice in vain
And If love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price
But we will not count the cost.

If you find that perfect blend of Peart and Moon in a band somewhere, just let me know, ok? \:\)

Ever wonder if Peart himself is a survivor? The song "Ghost Rider" from Vapor Trails was one that stuck with me in the beginning of my recovery. I know about him losing his daughter and his wife before that album, but stuff like "Bravado" and earlier still seems to have "survivor" meaning to me.

Thanks,

Joe

You know, a lot of people dig on Neil for not being the most subtle of lyricists, but I've always found his lyrics to be very powerful to me (and it's not just because I was a "Rand"y objectivist in high school).

I think that one theme that has always run through Neil's writing is the power of the individual to overcome terrific odds, and that is definitely a theme that will always resonate with survivors.

And, for the record, I just listened to Bravado again. Damn that beat during the last repeat of the chorus where he's rolling the ride cymbal and the hi hat on top of the drumbeat drives me crazy. I just don't get how he plays that! (Oh how many times have I said that about Rush songs).

FROM MARILLION - CHILDHOOD'S END

And it was morning
And I found myself mourning,
For a childhood that I thought had disappeared
I looked out the window
And I saw a magpie in the rainbow, the rain had gone
I'm not alone, I turned to the mirror
I saw you, the child, that once loved

The child before they broke his heart
Our heart, the heart that I believed was lost

Hey you, surprised? More than surprised
To find the answers to the questions
Were always in your own eyes

Do you realise that you give it on back to her?
But that would only be retraced in all the problems that you ever knew
So untrue
For she's got to carry on with her life
And you've got to carry on with yours

So I see it's me, I can do anything
And I'm still the child
'Cos the only thing misplaced was direction
And I found direction
There is no childhood's end
You are my childhood friend, lead me on

Hey you, you've survived. Now you've arrived
To be reborn in the shadow of the magpie

Now you realise, that you've got to get out of here
You've found the leading light of destiny, burning in the ashes of your memory
You want to change the world
You'd resigned yourself to die a broken rebel
But that was looking backward
Now you've found the light

You, the child that once loved
The child before they broke his heart
Our heart, the heart that I believed was lost

So it's me I see, I can do anything.
I'm still the child
'Cos the only thing misplaced was direction
And I found direction
There is no childhood's end
I am your childhood friend, lead me on

Hi Robbie,

Thanks for the e-mail. I've read the playlists the others have posted and I'm a little intimated by their knowledge of the music genre. I was afraid if I posted my playlist, they wouldreally rag on me. Here's my playlist that's on my iPod right now. Please don't laugh...

Blessed - Elton John
Against the Wind - Bob Seger
Return to Pooh Corner - Kenny Loggins
When You Believe - Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey
I Can See Clearly Now - Jimmy Cliff
You Raise Me Up - Josh Groban
Will You Be There - Michael Jackson
Rainbow Connection - Kermit THE Frog
The Prayer - Celine Dion & Andrea Bocelli
Bridge Over Troubled Waters - Simon & Garfunkel
Reflection - Christina Aguilera

Anyways, thanks to all who've shared their playlists. I'm intrigued to hear all the songs - especially the ones about CSA's. I probably would have never known about them if it weren't for all of you.

Take care,
Jay

Hmm i think rob wanted me to post my playlist so here it goes.
I just have a CD player in my car..no MP3 for this cool cat..so its more a list of favorite CDs

-When im real angry and i want to beat down the memories, i like to listen to hardcore/metalcore specificlly Hatebreed, especially
there third CD Perseverance.

-When im in a more laid back mood, i like Red Hotchilli peppers Stadium Arcadium, or some 3 doors down.

-if i want to relax some more 'old school' rock like Gun n' Roses, ACDC, Blacksabath, Billy Joel, The Eagles, stuff like that.

-if i need to get down to buisness and do some work..its techno all the way! nothing like some Aphex Twin to get that paper written

And if im feeling really frisky and feel like singing its Audioslave all the way, cuz i memorized all there songs so i never miss a beat.

Man, Tom! If you think Guns n' Roses and AC/DC are old school, you must be a kid! And who the heck are Aphex Twin and Audio Slave? Should I be listening to them? I'm 45. Do you think my heart can handle it?

I feel more at home with Larry's list -- or melliferal's. Musically, melliferal seems to be a man after my own heart.

I'm just going to add a few:

White Wedding - Billy Idol
Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles
The Logical Song - Supertramp
Come Sail Away, and Grand Illusion - Styx
Man of Constant Sorrow - from the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack.
The Rite of Spring - Stravinsky
Man In Black - Johnny Cash

Don't know Godsmack, but I do like KoRN. It's funny, cause my kids hate KoRN.

Seriously, I used to be a SoundGarden fan, and I liked Pearl Jam, but I couldn't stand Nirvana. House of Pain is one of my all-time faves, and I could keep going. I'm only about five to ten years behind the times...lol.

If you want to die laughing, listen to Hayseed Dixie's covers of Black Dog and Walk This Way. They are sick, wrong, and hilarious. Oh, and their version of Back in Black is even better.

CB...try downloading or buying Godsmack: I f***ing Hate You!

It may be a gateway song into a new and angry realm for you.LOL

I cant reccomend Seventh Day Slumber's album Shattered Life enough! It has CSA recovery written all over it!!!!!

So angry...yet SO strong...yet SO positive!!!

This is to Mother You - Sinead Oconnor

Everybody Hurts - REM
Brain Damage, and Eclipse - Pink Floyd
Love of My Life - Queen
Drift Away - Dobie Gray

Keep the Customer Satisfied - Simon and Garfunkel
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel

Come What May - Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge

Guess that's about it for now, tho I reserve the right to come back and add... \:\)

I listened to a few of those mentioned, and I really liked 'Waiting For My Real Life to Begin' by Colin Hay. Thanks for suggesting that.

I guess my favourite record for helping me through tough times is Counting Crows' album 'August and Everything After'. It's like an examination of loneliness; of wanting it but at the same time not wanting it, what that means, what you should do...

It's comforting in the sense that you're glad you're not alone in feeling bad like you do (because clearly Adam does too), rather than being particularly uplifting. Here are some lyrics from the album:

'Anna Begins'
I'm not ready for this sort of thing
But I'm not gonna break
And I'm not going to worry about it anymore
I'm not gonna bend. And I'm not gonna break and
I'm not gonna worry about it anymore

'Rain King'
And I said mama, mama, mama, why am I so alone
I can't go outside
I'm scared I might not make it home
I'm alive, I'm alive
But I'm sinking in
If there's anyone at home at your place, darling
Why don't you invite me in?
Don't try to bleed me
I've been there before
And I deserve a little more

This song also contains possibly my favourite ever lines:
Waiting for the sun /
It seems night endlessly begins and ends /
And ends and begins and ends /
After all the dreaming /
I just want to come back home again

They get progressively more... up-beat as the albums go on. A song on their latest album is 'Good Time' which goes:

You just wanna have a good time
Just like everybody else
You don't want to fall apart this time
I can look into your eyes and see the mess we're in
darling if it's shit came out
Then I suppose that it's shit went in
Even though I couldn't say I've been the places that you've been
You know he made my heart real strong
even if he made my head real thin
I wanna have a good time
just like everybody
I don't wanna fall apart

And one more, cos I don't want to ramble on forever! This is from 'All My Friends' from the album 'This Desert Life':

Thought I might get a rocket ride
When I was a child
But it was a lie
That I told myself when I needed something good

At 17 had a better dream
Now I'm 33 and it isn't me
But I'd think of something better if I could

All my friends and lovers
Leave me alone
And I'm still looking for a girl
One way or another
I'm just hoping to find a way
A way to put my feet out in the world

Here is a playlist I have been putting together. Some are true recovery songs, other's put me in the right mood to overcome internal turmoil. Each of these songs has meaning to me - maybe some will have meaning for you too:

Alive - Pearl Jam
Am I the Only One (Who's Ever Felt This Way) - Maria McKee
Crucify - Tori Amos
Down in a Hole - Alice in Chains
Lonliness - Annie Lennox
Kid Fears - Indigo Girls
Cool Change - Little River Band
Dust in the Wind - Kansas
Fade to Black - Metallica
In Hiding - Pearl Jam
Fighter - Christina Aguilera
King of Pain - The Police
Hang Tough - Tesla
Fuck You - Damageplan
Fine Again - Seether
I Am Mine - Pearl Jam
I Got a Name - Jim Croce
Shelter - Lone Justice
Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
Release - Pearl Jam
When I Change My Life - The Pretenders
Zerospace - Kidneythieves
Give to Live - Sammy Hagar
Heaven - Live (Not Bryan Adams or Warrant)
The Show Must Go On - Queen
Present Tense - Pearl Jam
Fully Alive - Flyleaf
Here Comes the Sun - the Beatles
I Stay Away - Alice in Chains
My Shit's Fucked Up - Warren Zevon
Show Me How to Live - Audioslave
Things've Changed - Sammy Hagar
Alive and Kicking - Simple Minds
Shout - Tears for Fears
Indifference - Pearl Jam
Take the Power Back - Rage Against the Machine
I Can Do This - Templeton Thompson (country)

The last song is perhaps the best - Templeton Thompson is a country singer/songwriter from near Nashville and I saw her perform live. You can download the song from Itunes or off of her website Here are the lyrics:

I CAN DO THIS

BONNIE BRAMLETT/SAM GAY/TEMPLETON THOMPSON

I CAN DO THIS, BUT IT'S GONNA BE HARD
I CAN GET THROUGH THIS
`CAUSE I'VE GOT THE SCARS TO PROVE I HAVE BEFORE
AND I HAVE SURVIVED, I'M STILL ALIVE

I CAN DO THIS, BUT IT'S GONNA TAKE TIME
I'VE LEARNED TO LIVE WITH EVERYTHING THAT LIFE HAS HANDED ME
WITH HUMILITY
AND I HAVE SURVIVED, I'M STILL ALIVE

THIS AIN'T THE FIRST TIME I'VE BEEN KNOCKED DOWN
THIS AIN'T THE WORST KIND OF TROUBLE I'VE SEEN
GOD KNOWS THAT I KNOW WHAT TO DO DOWN HERE ON MY KNEES
I'M BEGGIN' PLEASE, HAVE MERCY ON ME

I CAN DO THIS, BUT I'M GONNA NEED HELP
I KNOW I CAN'T DO IT ALL BY MYSELF
YOU KNOW I'VE TRIED AND TRIED
AND I'VE PAID SUCH A HEAVY PRICE
BUT I HAVE SURVIVED, I'M STILL ALIVE

THIS AIN'T THE FIRST TIME I'VE BEEN KNOCKED DOWN
THIS AIN'T THE WORST KIND OF TROUBLE I'VE SEEN
GOD KNOWS THAT I KNOW WHAT TO DO DOWN HERE ON MY KNEES
I'M BEGGIN' PLEASE, HAVE MERCY ON ME, `CAUSE WITH YOUR HELP, I KNOW….

I CAN DO THIS

OK, where to start.

I Love this song by the "Beach Boy's" (I doesn't sound like anything remotly close to any t]other song by them

Its called "Feel Flows" I highly recomend this song to all Survivors.

I'll right a full list later, but this has got to be my favorite survivor's song, with a Close tie or second place, "Kansass"--"Carry on my wayward son"

Logan

and I actually already owned Korn's "Here to Stay." Not bad for an old dude...huh?

Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Impression That I Get
plus video)

Here's a good one from some old pals out of Boston. Too bad they had the wrong bass player ;\) ...jk

Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get
have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess
Or has it ever come down to do or die
You've got to rise above the rest
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get
I'm not a coward,
I've just never been tested
I'd like to think that if I was,
I would pass
Look at the tested and think there but for the grace go
I might be a cowards,
I'm afraid of what I might find out
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
That's the impression that I get

SuperTramp,

I want to take a moment and welcome you to MS, this is a great place to find many guys who are all here to support each other.

I have to admit, I don't now many of the songs on your list, but the ones I am familiar with are great choices.

Your friend,
Carl

Bach concertos.

I listen to them often, especialy in the metro. It brings a level higher over the crowd I see.

ADD:

The Hurting - Tears For Fears.

A fantastic CD! From Wiki: lyrics reflecting Orzabal's bitter childhood and upbringing. The Hurting can be considered Tears for Fears' only true concept album, as references to emotional distress and primal therapy are found in nearly every song.

God Rob, all I can think when I look at that picture is "how can I save you Mom".

It's an amazing perspective, the answer is "I couldn't" right?

Stay strong

No, you couln't save an adult as a kid.

I did not mean for that album art to be triggering at all.

That picture depicts exactly how I've felt in the last 8 months.

Kid Fears with Michael Stipe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM9JLtz1BBs

Pain from pearls-hey little girl-
How much have you grown?
Pain from pearls-hey little girl-
Flower for the ones you've known.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Secret staircase, running high,
You had a hiding place.
Secret staircase, running low,
But they all know, now you're inside.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Skipping stones, we know the price now,
Any sin will do.
How much further, if you can spin.
How much further, if you are smooth.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Replace the rent with the stars above.
Replace the need with love.

Replace the anger with the tide.
Replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love.

Replace the rent with the stars above.
Replace the need with love.

Replace the anger with the tide.
Replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Replace the rent with the stars above.
Replace the need with love.

Replace the anger with the tide.
Replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love.

Here is another one i like, it speaks to me.

Corey Taylor - Bother

Wish I was too dead to cry
My self-affliction fades
Stones to throw at my creator
Masochists to which I cater
You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I was too dead to care
If indeed I cared at all
Never had a voice to protest
So you fed me shit to digest
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
For this, I gave up trying
One good turn deserves my dying

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

[Solo: Corey]

Wish I'd died instead of lived
A zombie hides my face
Shell forgotten
with its memories
Diaries left
with cryptic entries

And you don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on:
I'll never live down my decei

Ok Rob, How about this one...

Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide

I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
til the landslide brought it down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, Ive been afraid of changing cause ive
Built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And Im getting older, too

Well, Ive been afraid of changing cause ive
Built my life around you
Time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And Im getting older, too
I get older, too

I took my love and took it down
I climbed a mountain, I turned around
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
The landslide brought it down
The landslide brought it down

Starsailor - Some of Us

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Fz7BDvLGIg

I actually don't really like this band, but this song was featured on a tv show when a child molester/killer was being arrested and it hit just the right chord with me. Some of the lyrics include

some of us laugh
some of us cry
some of us smoke
some of us lie
but its all just a way that we cope with our lives

I like it because I always put on an image of laughing and in a good mood no matter how depressed I am.
