i could see potentially it making things possibly complex -

but a moderator devoted to it - once a day - steer things with a reminder back on course .....

again ... jarrad's point - this site is complex as is life -
it will be a missed outlet.

i thought the shout box was kind of annoying so i dont really care that it's gone, but i dont like the attitude of extreme censorship here. how are we supposed to heal and learn to trust if we are constantly being told 'you cant say that' 'you cant do that' 'listen to us or we will ban you.' kind of sounds like the shit im trying to heal from. hmmm.

I kind of miss the shoutbox too. It put a human face on this forum.

I understood it as the moderaters could not edit it, did not have control of it. In a place so much emotions already, and new people perhaps 'browsing' here at any time, and some of the messages I seen in it before, it make sense that if it can not be edited, it is gone.

why are the new members valued over the current members?

not everything needs to be 'edited'

The shout box does have a place here, it could be a life saver because it is real time, and a member could ask for help using this function.

I hope it is returned because it does give a forum devoid of animation, some talking place for those who need it.
Please return it,

ste

I will concede it did seem a bit too raucous at times - to create an inviting
unitimidating space to new people -

we all know each other - after being around each other a while -

the distinction - between a healing site - and space for fun and jokes - aren't
incompatible -

but as a fronticepeice - a front page - almost welcoming item -

i can see how it might confuse - intimidate - or just make sense -
somewhere else -

here's a thought begining -

it seemed a lot of us - have either jokes - or ideas -

or art - we want to share -

the immediacy to blow off steam in the shout box was great -

can it be moved to the members section in an off topic like
category ?

thanks - and please add ...

I am not saying they are. I am saying that a new person considering to come here for help, probably have not spoke of events of the past before in 'real life', come to here and there is talk of 'tits' and 'perv' stuff in the shout box, I think they would possibly not return.

Chat is not 'edit' either, and it become sometime quite heated, quite discusting, and quite obnoxious. That is how it remains, because it is not edited. I do not mean it is not also very good and support place. But that is truth, that it is often not controlled in there, and will at times even become a very sexual chat, and I do not mean sexual in meaning of talking about abuse issues. Do we really need another place at this site that is so unedited as that?

I am sorry the toy was taken. And I am sorry if my view of it is not 'popular'. But I agree with moderaters of this decision, very much. No, not everything need to be edited. But there is enough un-edited, and unsafe, in real life. This SHOULD be a safe place for people to find support and help, not lewd talk and sex jokes. Dislike my opinion if you wish, but it is mine and it remains.

I personally saw dialogue in the shout box that was potentially-negatively-triggering material. Since such up-front material is not useful for healing, but could more likely scare people off, it's better the venue not have to be seen in the first place. It's like the people who say if you don't like what's on tv, change the channel. But, it's too late, what was shown was already seen and that can't be undone.

I propose what others already have: bring back the box, but keep an eye on its contents and provide the mods with editing permissions.

There were a number of reasons the shoutbox was removed:
  • Negative impact on survivors first visiting the site.
  • Triggering and inappropriate content
  • The inability to moderate the content
  • The lack of manpower to supervise the shoutbox on a full-time basis
Unlike the chat, the shoutbox is readily visible to people coming here for the first time. As this is a healing place, MaleSurvivor does not think it is appropriate to expose those who are looking for help to potentially triggering words and thoughts before they even get in the door.

The shoutbox discussion also considered the fact that there are other places for this kind of communication, such as the chat room. The unmoderated or off topic forums in particular could be used to create the humorous threads that were created in the shoutbox, assuming the other discussion board guidelines are followed.
