My book is out March 8th, Our Little Secret has pre-orders of 37000 copies in the UK and Australia alone.

It is being translated into Swedish, Italian, Estonian and Bulgarian. Negotiations are underway for French and German translations.

Reviews are VERY positive so far, but the opinions I care about are those of my peers.

That looks great Duncan. The front cover is compelling. If I had some money, I'd pre-order it too. I'll put it on my shopping list for later, good work man, keep up the recovery.

You can hear an interview I did with Radio Lincolnshire online.

Quote:
Whatever you do don't miss Tuesday's show when you can hear from a Lincolnshire chap called Duncan Fairhurst. Duncan's just written a book called "Our Little Secret". It's as harrowing a tale as you could imagine, detailing as it does the systematic sexual abuse of a young child by his father. The sexual abuse of a child is not comfortable breakfast listening you might think but Duncan speaks so eloquently about his experience it makes for a compelling listen. If you miss it I urge you to use the listen again feature on the website.

From Amazon

An incredible story - very moving, 8 Mar 2007

Reviewer: "Kathy" (Blackburn, Lancashire)

I have read a number of what they call 'misery memoirs' - Behind Closed Doors, Ghost Girl and A piece of Cake but i think this is the best of the lot. How this boy got over all that he suffered amazes me. Yes, it's grim and painful to read at times but the end is excellent - he is so brave.

You might like to know that "Our Little Secret" is going into the Sunday Times best sellers list at Number 8.

I am told thats quite an achievement, specially on a half weeks sales.

Again, I report a remarkable finding to my peers on Male Survivor.

This week "Our Little Secret" goes up in the Times best seller list to Number 4.

The first person from Male Survivor to read it left the following comment.

" There are many books "out there" relating the experiences of survivors of childhood sexual abuse, but this one by Duncan Fairhurst is outstanding for its contributions to two themes of special importance. These both involve feelings that all survivors have to struggle with, but find difficult to understand themselves, much less convey to others.

The first of these is that of the utter helplessness and innocence of the abused child. At the age of four or six, and even older, Little Duncan had no idea that what his father was doing to him was sexual. The things that were happening distressed, frightened and shamed him, but he had no understanding of them or any idea that they were unusual or unacceptable. He loved and trusted his Dad, so when he was told that this was "our little secret" and that all boys do this with their fathers, he simply believed every word and did what he was told. The abusive father controlled everything: what would happen, where and when, and on the few occasions when Duncan would resist or protest, the result was likely to be an escalation into violent rape. Even later on, as the boy began to hear about child abuse (on the BBC for example), he simply could not believe that this is what was happening to him. His Dad loved him - surely what they were doing must be something else. These parts of the book are just heart-rending and need to be read by anyone who supposes that an abused boy could have said no or protected himself. Fairhurst's book gives a searing illustration of the basic truth that the abused child, quickly overwhelmed in a cloud of confusion, deceit, fear and shame, is always an absolutely defenseless victim and never to blame for what is happening to him.

The other area where this book makes an important contribution is on the theme that the impact of abuse does not end just because the abusive acts themselves have stopped. At the age of 14 Duncan took a massive overdose of Paracytomol and barely survived; after that his father's advances stopped. But the boy had learned some terrible lessons: that the world is dangerous and cruel for a child, that his feelings and needs as a boy do not matter, that he is not loved or special, that nothing is too terrible to happen to him, and that relationships with other people are purely transactional - you do whatever you need to do in order to get what you want. His emerging child's sense of boundaries and morality wrecked by abuse, he was unable to relate normally even to friends in school and gradually drifted into the lonely barren world of thievery and drug abuse.

Duncan,

I am really glad to hear that the book is doing so well - I am going to have to get a copy of it

I thank you so much for writing a book that really is helping others to see that abuse does not happen from a stranger as much as many people seem to think it does - people need to know that it does happen inside of families

Thanx for breaking the secret

Duncan,

I have recently registered my details with Male Survivors and wish to make contact with you. It is Stuart Howarth Author of 'Please Daddy No'.

Look forward to hearing from you and congratulations on the release of your book. We all need to stand together my friend and I would welcome your support and also to discuss several areas.

Best wishes to you and all the other survivors worldwide who break free from the pain, shame and silence.

Best wishes

Stuart and Tracey Howarth

Dunx,

Any further news on the book? I still haven't seen copies in places I have looked. For example, I didn't see it in Blackwells in Oxford, which usually carries everything, especially bestsellers. I wonder if your agent should know about this.

Much love,
Larry

Larry,

I did mention it to my agent, he said its in the shops that count (WTF that means Im not sure) and this week we went to Number 3 in the Times best seller list.

Shadow,

Nail on the head, again "Your hit the nail right on the head"

Ste, I had a good team, all the players count in getting a good book out. Of course I had help to put stuff in order but the writing is all home grown. I wrote about 120g's in terms of wordage needing to submit 75g's contractually. They accepted 92g's.

PS - is that a veiled compliment??

Guys,

Just a note to confirm what another reviewer of Dunx' book says. It IS triggering in some places. Not nearly as much as it could have been, but there are places where he doesn't hold back from describing what CSA is all about. I think in this case that made for a better book: why should we spare others from reading about the terrible things we actually endured? But there you go. This is an excellent book, but take care if you are in a fragile place.

Much love,
Larry

Ste,

If you feel your story needs telling, then tell it.

Thats how it starts. Pick it up, put it down pick up again. I started in 2002, took me 5 years to finish.

The book looks like its hard to get in the US. Amazon appears to be the only one carrying it and they are sold out. However Amazon UK has it in stock and you can get it sent the US. With standard shipping 5-6 days, its only about $29USD. Not as bad as you might think.

I did notice it's there now and I'm glad we have it listed. It's in all the categories where it should be, I think. But in point of fact I had nothing to do with this. Eddie and I are still looking at general issues and not specific items yet.

Dunx,

No, that's not the case at all. I noticed the problem and it seems to involve a quirk of the software. That is, there's something about your book that's causing it not to appear in our Autobiography list, though before that it was showing on several lists. One possibility is that it's listed in more places than the software can accommodate.

Eddie looked into the program and the book is right there with the others on the list. But on the relevant display page it just shows as a gap. We're trying to figure out why.

Actually, that's not true at all. EDDIE is trying to figure out why and I make him coffee and watch him do all the work, injecting an idiotic suggestion here and there as additional emotional punishment.

Anyway, we have noticed the problem and we're working on it. There's at least one other book that's affected by a similar problem.

Much love,
Larry

Hi Duncan,

As Larry said above, there's some gremlin in the works somewhere. As you can probably tell, our MS Bookstore is linked to Amazon, which is where we actually build the pages of books that display here at MS. I can see your book on the page there at Amazon, but when the page displays here at MS there's just a gap where it's supposed to be. I'm going to do some experimenting this evening with it to see if I can figure out why it's happening. And all the while, I'll have to listen to Larry's suggestions -- "Are you sure you put it in the right place? Is it supposed to look like that?" I'll let you know what I find out.

O.k., I think I know what the issue may be. The link at the top of this thread goes to http://WWW.AMAZON.CO.UK, which is the UK component of Amazon. Our MS Bookstore links into http://WWW.AMAZON.COM, the US version. When I go to http://WWW.AMAZON.COM and do a search on "Our Little Secret" or "Duncan Fairhurst", the book doesn't come up. If I go to the CO.UK site, then the book is there.

Duncan - I'm guessing your publisher has an agreement with CO.UK to sell the book but not with .COM? The only books we're able to get to are the ones on .COM. Apparently it was on .COM at one point, but is gone now (maybe listed in error?). Long story short, it's not on .COM so we can't get to it from the Amazon software that builds the pages here in the MS bookstore (although we could at one point). I went and looked at the bookstore page where it used to be, and it is gone from there now as well, even when looking at the page in the software build place on Amazon.

So I guess the main question right now is -- do you know if it should for certain be listed on .COM? If so, let me know and I'll try to contact Amazon to see if they can somehow copy the CO.UK entry into .COM.

I swear I didn't put anything in his coffee guys! Really I didn't. Humph. "co.uk"? ".com"? Sounds like Star Wars characters.... CP3O, R2D2, Jedico.UK, ....

I checked at Indigo and the book doesn't get released in Canada until May 1. Maybe the US is similar.

Thanks Nobs. We will get the book into our lists again as soon as we can, Dunx, but for the time being it does seem to be a problem beyond our control.

Meanwhile I will continue to think up cool IT solutions and suggestions for Eddie to explore.

Much love,

The last time I really cried was when I was typing my own memoirs.
I dont know how you did it, but glad it worked for you.
I am sure, that if guys want the book, they could buy it on amazon uk.

I can get copies here if anybody wants to pay for shipping.
Have a look in MS bookstore.
BTW dunx, its best to launch a book in autumn rather than summer.
Wait till September for launch in the states.

I want to pass on how cathartic it was to write. Very theraputic.

Aside from 2 years of Gestalt Psychotherapy it is without doubt the best step in healing I have ever undertaken.

Dunx,

As I read your book I felt I could actually see that in your writing. A lot of the turmoil and anger that I could sense at the beginning seemed to fade and resolve by the end. You were clearly much more at peace.

Much love,
Larry

Dunx,

I keep forgetting to tell you I saw your book for the first time in Heathrow last week. Well done! Please do let Eddie or me know when there's an American edition so we can get it back into our Bookstore.

Much love,
Larry
