Web Group Therapy

Hi everyone I have this idea and would like to get feedback from you guys.
I have been doing phone therapy for a few years now and getting together with Ray my T every 3 months in person. I live in a very rural area and it is a 2 hour drive to the twin cities where I was seeing a different T in person. The 4 hour drive for a one hour session was to much. That is why I started phone work with Ray.

The church was paying the bill for my T but now have cut off that help. I have no health insurance so there is no help there either.

With todays technology, computers with cameras built in, teleconferencing, and internet phone services why couldn't we start a few web groups that would serve our needs. Think that we could have some groups that would have a T and some that would be self help groups without a T.

If we put this together right we could even try to get funding to help pay for it.

Let me know what you think.

Tom

Count me in. Yes, VERY good idea Tom. Of course, we'll be excluding people w/dial-up, but I LIKE IT. Let's do it.

Jajah offer free broadband telephony to registered users.
I have often thought about this idea, but it is against
MS guidelines.

Maybe its the future of new chat rooms, I dont know,
teleconferencing is only good if you have a good cam
and software to work in real time.

Maybe get yr T to register so the phone call will be
free, then think about the webconference stuff, its
easy to set up, loads of software to do it.

Just be aware that MSN, Yahoo etc., can be hijacked,
so better to use stand alone software which you should
also be able to get free,

I have hosted online self help groups. It's pretty easy to set up, but the host needs some specialised training. All you really need is a chatroom with the ability to set up private rooms.

I brought this proposal up in the chat a little while ago, using Skype as an example, and everyone was dead against it and bascially shouted me down. I find it fascinating that there is obviously some support, perhaps it depends largely on who is doing the proposing?

If you were applying for funding why not integrate it into the existing chat as a subroom with no restrictions on who can access it. That way dialup people in the far country like me who not only can't get to shrinks, but can't get adsl or anything close, so that we can still join in via text. If done properly we may still be able to join in in some audio way too, there is web radio for dialup and you can compress simple speech a lot and get away with it.

I would support this, as long as it's properly researched, not in the usual community group way of 'this is what the committee has decided and that's what you'll get and you'll like it'. I would expect all options to be explored, the best possible, most inclusive one selcted after much deliberation and consulation, using Skype and low bandwidth web radio as starting points.

I think topic chats are a good idea. I have seen them work and they have a pretty low overhead, technologically. I don't see a lot of value in having voice or video, esp considering the bandwidth issues that ash has mentioned. A whiteboard or some other non-verbal tool would be cool though, because some thoughts are easier to express through drawing.

I already replied on the other side of the board, but I think it's an intriguing idea.
