You Raise Me Up Lyrics
by Josh Groban

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

It is our Anthem.

The last two retreats that I've attended has always used this in their ending ceremonies.

What makes it especially meaningful is while it is playing, we each are pulled to our feet by the person sitting next to us and we do the same for the person on the other side until all have been pulled to a standing position. Everyone is included, including the facilitators. It doesn't take more than one or two being pulled to their feet before the tears are rolling down my face. Sometimes, if you have been sitting besides someone who has been especially meaningful to you during the retreat, you might get a hug. At this last retreat at Alta, I was sitting next to a guy who became an instant brother during a reinactment of what happened to him as a boy. As he was directing some of us in the reinactment, he fell to his knees and began to sob...I thought that I was the only man who could cry like that.
Anyway, when, "You Lift Me Up," was playing, later, during the closing ceremonies, and he pulled me to my feet, he hugged me like I'd never been hugged by a man before. I hugged him back with just as much force and love. A lot of that was going on once I became aware of the others in the room.
All I can tell you is that I wanted to rent a car and drive home, alone, and let all of that settle into me rather than face the rush-hour business of the airport and flying home.
It was a mountain top experience on that mountain top at Alta.
Thanks for the memories...of "You Lift Me Up."

David
