hello everyone,
i am working on restoring my 76 ford granada. i am trying to find websites with salvage info on parts i need but am not having much luck. i have two leads on used engines from carparts.com with 2k and 9k respectively. engine and drivetrain parts are not too difficult. what i really need are body panels (fenders and quarter panels). that is the difficulty i am having. also, if there is anyone with a good deal on a 76 granada or similar, i can either use it as parts for my four door, or work on it as well. a dream i have is pursuing the hobby of restoring these great cars and reselling them to people who would give them proper homes \:\) . at this point though, all i want is to restore my old girl. any help or contacts would be more appreciated than you can realize, unless you savy the draw of men and their cars \:D . take care.

Wow, my grandmother had a granada, it had a 302 in it. It was a little rocket ship. lol. The first thing that went was the fenders. If I see or hear of anything, I'll let you know.

thanks, mike. this car is my "baby" and i have long wanted to put her back into pristine condition. it is a bummer looking for parts that don't seem to exist. have some good leads, as i said, but anything would help. i might even post a few pics with before and after for those that would be interested \:\) . i think the granadas are one of those american cars that everyone knew someone who had one. i have big plans for my "girl", big plans \:D . take care.

I can't remember what the US Granada looks like, I just hope it's better than the UK 'Granny' - that was a shed on wheels.

But I'm not a Ford man, had one once - for 3 weeks - and the rust was faster than the car !

dave,
normally, those would be "fightin words" here in ford country, but i will forgive ;\) , besides, i know the factory qc of the 70's was not what it should have been for anything out of detroit. check out this site for what the american granadas are like "http://www.ford.an.pl/granada/".

mike,
thanks for the link, unfortunately, there were two types of granadas that ford made, the american and the european style. this works well for each of the target consumers, but for someone looking to restore the american version, the prospects are rather bleak, but still doable \:\) . thanks for the tip, though. review the site i gave dave for what the american cars looked like. mine is the four door sedan, there are many coupes on the site, most of them with 8 cylinder engines. more power, for sure, but the inline six is the way to go for longevity and it is possible to get some good power from the engine. they did wonders in the australian inline six engines with a different intake set-up. take care, all.

i think i am going to cry, for a good reason though. one of the leads i was looking at worked out. there is a 1980 granada sedan with power everything plus a/c, not to mention the venerable inline 250 engine, with only 41k original miles...documented. she looks to be in pristine shape. the current owner is willing to wait for a month till i can scrape the cash to get this car then he will meet me halfway on a road trip for the delivery. it is a hardtop, just like i prefer them to be, and it is a really cool sunburst orange color \:D . now all i need to do is work something out for my 76 to get her out of the weather and a place to store the parts i will be replacing. then i will be all set. i will have the car i prefer, cool color, a/c, and an engine that can't say stop...i am a happy man. take care, all. btw, i am still looking for sources for the restoration, so please keep em peeled.

thanks, mike. looking forward to the pit and the emergency room visits \:\)

just got off the horn with a few shops around the region. no one will touch the frame off work, no one will even touch it if i do the work mysef (strip car to frame, strip old paint and rust, prep for new paint). i don't believe businesses are turning down work! i knew i would be doing the restoration myself, but i thought some businesses would not mind to get my money for work requiring the special tools and waste disposal that i don't have access to! oh well, just means the satisfaction will be that much greater when it is finished, only it will take longer now. take care, all. sorry to turn this into a car forum, but i just wanted to share part of the journey that is good.

Theo,
Called a local yard for you and asked if they had any '76 Granada's and he said they have a couple then asked me what I was looking for so I told him finder's so he looked then asked with or without cornering lights. I have no idea what you are looking for so here is there number 800-422-8675. In the phone book they say "Nationwide Parts Locator" so if they dont have it maybe they can find it for you and they said they will ship. Good luck. Maybe when your done you can post some pic's for us to see \:D .

sar,
long memory, sar \:\) . now that you reminded me of it, i do recall that. it is a change. i admit i have not been this excited about a project in a very long time. i have had this car since 93, and the last few years i have ended up towing it wherever we moved to \:D . with the positive lead on the 1980 car, i might have to wait a few to start on the restoration, but that is okay.

james, don't worry, i will post the pics as long as the forum lets me ;\) . might have to start another forum here on the site just for hobbies...hey, that is not a bad idea at all. check out the lt forum for more on this, james. i have an idea.

I hope it's a quicker job than my 4x4 project that's been outside my workshop for about 18 months now, the last 4 virtually untouched

It's got to the stage where it's nearly finished and maybe a week off work would see it ready for competition, it's getting soooo frustrating.
But finish it I must, because my mate Chris is getting fed up of me smashing the sides of his Range Rover against trees and rocks ! \:D

I did a bit of work on "The Flyer" last weekend and it was wonderful, even lying on my back in the wet welding and getting sparks down my shirt was fun.
There's a great satisfaction in accomplishing something you can stand back and look at. ( nobody would 'admire' this creation ! )

Hobbies are a lifeline for many of us I'm sure, and I know that I abandoned my hobbies for many years and just sat watching shit on TV and drinking beer, but while I was doing that I was also sinking further into my own personal pity-pit.
Healing has allowed me to go back to my various hobbies, and they in turn help my healing by relaxing me and make me think about something else.
They also socialized me again, I went out and joined clubs, met new people and learned that I wasn't 'Billy no mates' any more.

Hobbies are good for us.

Dave

Bill, my favorite color has been orange since I was in middle school because it was never anyone else's favorite color and I thought that was unfair to orange.

Ok, I'll concede the Mustangs, well the classic ones at least because there were some dogs over the years, but the good ones were superb.
And of course the UK's Mark One & Two Escort rally cars.

Although I did have a very exciting through Manhatten in a Crown Victoria driven by a gentleman who couldn't speak English and who's name I couldn't pronounce. But I knew I was in the hands of a truly exceptional driver.

He had to be to drive that shed as fast as he did !

the thing I found most exciting was the huge rear bench seat covered in thick shiny plastic that made every corner an excercise in finding something to hang on as I slid from door to door.

20$ was cheap for those kind of thrills \:D

the only downside to that particular thrill, dave, is the rest of the evening you spend digging out that annoying "bench seat bunch" \:D

Ok Mike, you forgot a couple...

Fastest On Race Day...or

First On Race Day!

My "guys" have spent several drool filled days at the World Ford Challenge in St. Louis!

The street legal Mustangs there...that they drove to the track... only went 170 mph. in 8.7 seconds. (Yeah, he's here telling me this stuff!)

Oh, and yes, there were Granadas there! :p

thumbs up, waaayyy up! ford rules!

that is the cool thing about granadas, one of many for me at any rate. they were not considered muscle cars by any stretch of the imagination, but there have been many that have been tricked out to scream on the track. drop in a 351 windsor on a granada, toss in the right gears for the rear end, and jump back!

Well, being a Ford fan myself. I see that since people can't beat a Ford, they have to try to knock it down to the level of the other cars. Try to get it to me more of a level playing field - ain't going to happen. Ford Rules.

jeez mike,
you just don't let it go, do you \:\) ...well, i did say don't trash my granada, and you haven't told me your ride so i can't creatively respond. therefore, i guess the only thing left to do is answer your question \:\)

i have an excelent line on a parts car, a 78 ESS. don't recall if i said that already. it has everything but the fenders (l&r) and the bumperasseblies from the front and back. it is also missing the tailight lenses and housing. i believe he is also keeping the front grill panel, if i understand the term he used for it. everything else is in it. all the interior (seating, carpet, dashpad, instrument cluster, etc). the engine and other mechanicals are still going to be there as well. mainly, i just need to find the fenders to replace. i think i might have to wait somewhat for the resto work, unless i can pull something off with the local voc school. fenders and bumpers. if i have to, i can use some parts temporarily on the 78 till i can arrange to do the restoration work. more than you asked for, mike, but i can rattle on about this for quite awhile \:\) . i will let you go for now before i get into the details...and you're welcome ;\) .

bill,
agreed, my friend! someday, grasshopper, the world will know the power of blue \:D

i might have to add to my signature, or change the avatar to the ford badge...naahhh, i'll put up a pic of my granada for the avatar \:\)

i just came back from sitting in my 76 and wondering if i will ever be able to finish, hell, even to start on her. do you guys know what its like to sit in the midst of yet another shattered dream? sorry, of course you do. i just see her slipping away every day, little by little. this was my first car. not many have that chance to really restore their first car. i sat in her and fought the urge to cry. i went over again for the upteenth time in the last few days and felt a little better in terms of her potential condition. it is not about my car, i know that. i see the car as part of myself, the part i want to rebuild. it felt good to imagine one day cruising the road with her again...will it only be imagination? i don't know anymore, i just don't.

Your first car ! it's got to be done man !
That's so cool that you still have it. The memories a first car has within it are wonderful, and I've been reminded of that just this week when my best friends younges son passed his drivers test and took off in his VW Polo, with the stereo going at a million decibels, in search of girls.

I had a Mini at 17yo, full of rust and burning oil faster than Texas could pump the stuff. But some go-faster stripes and a big bore muffler I was the king of the road.
Until I crashed it, but I straightened it out and learned a lot. ( mainly panel beating skills )
Happy days.

Get the spanners out Theo.

can someone give the 'tecno-peasants' like myself the SIMPLE guide to posting pictures, and maybe we could use this forum for relaxing and talking about our hobbies.

James has just mentioned model making, and a Survivor friend of mine is a super talented artist and model maker, I'd love to show you all some of his work.
And my creations as well.

Lloydy, pictures need to be on a web site, not your local computer. Then you link to them.

Otherwise, you need to have a section here on the website where people can upload images. Posting pictures this way eats bandwidth. Uploading takes disk space.

Mike - and everyone else.
I might have jumped the gun a bit here, because as Mike points out pictures eat up bandwidth - which we haven't got spare.

There is also the issue of what type of picture we allow. Obviously we can't allow pic's that are sexual in any way, but we do need to take some care about what we post - any ideas ?

Also the Leadership Team are looking into the possibility of another forum or somewhere we can post pictures.

Nice Granny though, and it is the same as we had in the UK.
My friend had a Ghia Coupe version with the 'Fastback' and the 3 litre V6 engine. Nice car ( through gritted teeth \:D \:D )

Dave,

The bandwidth is only an issue if we put the pictures on a site MaleSurvivor pays for. If I post a link to a picture stored on my account at the ISP in Maryland, it's their bandwidth, not MaleSurvivor's. MaleSurvivor only serves up a bit of text that specifies the link. Each user who surfs to that post then fetches the image from the ISP server with their browser.

It's still a good idea to know what kinds of pictures would be allowed.

Thanks,

Joe

Yeah, just load your picture into your special hidden identity yahoo or whatever account and post it. I don't think I should post a picture of my toe , wouldn't want to gross anybody out. It is pretty easy to post a picture, I even managed to do it. \:D

and back to theo's original post, I wondered why anybody would want to restore a 1976 Granada (nothing against Granadas, just not a car one would normally think of restoring), but it was explained later on. I had thought of restoring my first car once, a 1975 Ford Elite, a fine car. I saw it on the side of the road one day with a for sale sign in it. A beautiful metalic green, with green vinyl roof and green interior. Such a beautiful wonderful car it was.

Have fun Theo, it is a worthy project.
Bill

bill,
thanks. i do understand the unusual nature of restoring a granada. it was a great car overall for its time, but not one to cause the heart to skip a beat or impress the ladies. i was just spending some time on some ford forums and came across some other 70's cars that did look cool and am starting to develop a wish list that goes beyond the granada \:\) . this was my first car, and i will restore her. for me though, there was something about the classic lines of the 70's fords that i really like. i don't know what it is, and not all of them resonate with me. some just seem to have more class than others, and some have "cool" written all over them in my humble opinion. take care.

Ahhhhhh, my first car, a 1971 MGB convertible. When I got it, it was a mess. It's amazing that I ever got it to run at all. It had all of the normal problems. Valves needed lapping. The insulation on the wiring had dried out and was crumbling off throughout the entire car. The carborators were in pieces in a box (I put them together without even having a diagram to look at). The torn roof. etc. etc. It took me forever to synchronize those carborators by sight, touch, smell, etc. (They wanted a fortune for the tool). I managed to get her together good enough to run for a while. Quick little bugger. With the low center of gravity, the dual shock system, and tall thin tires, it was amazing around corners.

theo,

The only lady you need to impress is lady theo, and I think you already did that.

Please don't tell me you are going to restore an AMC Pacer next. Yikes. Maybe a 1973 Pinto? You may get a bang out of it. A Maverick was a nice ride. The '70's Mustangs were a major disappointment as were the Thunderbirds. How about a Lincoln Continental Mark IV? I always wanted a Continental ;\) .

pinto? ugghhh! the 1970 and 1976 ranchero now....those were cool! i have a couple pics of those models i downloaded, very sharp. unfortunately, lady theo draws the line at rancheros \:\)

mike, i knew you had to have some four wheel iron in your blood \:\) . i recall seeing an mg years ago that was for sale and i thought it was a cool car. it looked way too small, but i still thought it looked cool.

so far, the only 70's series i can convince lady theo on are the granadas...but i'll keep trying ;\)

I had a 71 MGB convertible as well, Teal blue with wire wheels and overdrive.
I rebuilt the engine to about 3/4 race tune and that was quick in it's day. Twin Webber's sorted the carb' problems ! ( 20 mpg  )

It was typical 'me' when I bought it though - always an impulse buyer with cars, still am.
I was renovating the cottage we live in now and needed a small truck, so one Saturday I went looking for one, and came back with the MG. \:D

70'S cars are having a huge revival here in the UK amongst young people. The insurance on anything decent for anyone up to 21 is horrendous. But they can get classic car insurance with limited milage far cheaper, so they can buy some decent cars and afford to run them.
A young lad I know has a Truimph Dolomite Sprint - 2 litre twin cam with fuel injection, a top car in the early 70's - and he pays less insurance than a VW Polo 1 litre.

But you really need the clothes as well to get the effect, just think "Starsky & Hutch" - or perhaps not....

definitely, NOT! i love the 70's fords, but i recall having to wear some of those "fashions" from then, and i still shudder \:\) . and yes, the quotes did imply it was to be perceived as a cuss word ;\)

theo, I've changed cars more than some people change their underwear. I had a 196 V6 4-speed 1979 Chevy Monza 2+2, after trashing 1 motor and 3 4-speeds (reverse drops, speed shifting, slam shifting, etc.) from street racing and beating on it, I put a 327 in it, and converted it over to an automatic. Did you know that if you floor the gas pedal and throw a rear wheel drive car into reverse when doing over 100 all it does is break the rear tires free and try to throw the car into a spin? I also used to stop tailgaters by throwing my car into reverse. I've changed countless numbers of engines and stuff. The Monza was one of my babies, it could even pull wheelies, but it met an unfortunate death. The motor literally twisted the unibody until the windshield broke and the sub frame ripped out of the body. Used to hang out and drink beers in a garage. We were all motor heads. My record engine & tranny change: Pulled car into the garage, pulled engine and tranny, pulled car out of the garage, pulled parts car into the garage, pulled engine and tranny, pulled parts car out of the garage, pulled original car back into the garage, installed engine and tranny, test drove car, 2 people, 2 hours, no air tools. But, since we are talking about 70's cars, nothing beats the Chargers and Challengers.
Now, 4 Wheels = 2 slow.

mike,
i'll have to look up the monza. i admit, i don't recall hearing of them. i understand the charger and the other though. i prefer fords, but i do not have the rabid fever over the ongoing haggle over the best. however, the kid gloves come off on my girl \:D .
with your experience, i will be picking your brains on the work i will be doing on my 76. one thing i am considering is dropping a big block six into the bay for more torque in the bottom end. don't want a racer, just one that will turn heads as i pass the slowpokes on the highway. take care.

Depending on which model and which effect kit, the monza looked like various cars. I had more than one, one of the ones that I had was a Monza Spider. Another effect kit made them look like camaros, another made them look like indy cars. They were small, and with a V6 (or larger \:D ) they were fast. They were also throw away cars, use 'em, and get rid of them. There was a group of guys that used to drag too. One guy put a 454 with a blower and Nitrous into a chevy chevette. It was basically direct drive (no drive shaft). Another had a Fiero with a V8 (have to look up the motor, don't remember the exact model) with a 6 pack. Then there were the classics, a Road Runner, a Fury II, a Duster, etc., etc. The guys at the garage had a Chevelle, a T-bird, a LeMans, a El Camino, a Monte Carlo, and few others. I haven't done much of that stuff since the guys went their separate ways and we closed "The Garage".

I believe that the "General Lee" was a challenger and that the Starky and Hutch car was a Charger.

And the vote for "Totally cool style" ( and ignoring whether it a good car or not ) goes to the 'bat wing' Impala's - especially the El Camino!! and the boat tail Buick La Sabre.

If you could see the shite we had to drive in the UK when you guys had these finned wonders, then you'd see how lucky youb were.
Until you got 'K' cars and Pacers that is !

I said I wasn't sure. lol
I haven't seen that show since it was originally broadcast. I just remember that it was a similar body style. I think there was a black challenger in Steven Kings "The Dark Half".

hey all,
just wanted to post an update since so many responded to this thread of mine. i was able to work out a deal with a person who has a 79 granada that has everything but the fenders and bumper assemlies. i plan on swapping fenders and such to make this one roadworthy for short term use and put my 76 in storage till i can do a proper job of the restoration. once i get to that point i will more than likely swap out the 79 parts as the donor for the restoration. it would take too much time to do the job right and i will do it the way it should be done but i want to drive a granada now \:\) . this will get me on the road for now and i can restore my 76 properly. who knows, i might be able to keep both cars and find parts for the 76 restoration...lady theo would love having two complete granadas sitting in the driveway \:D . take care.
