It is good to love as many things as one can, for therein lies true strength, and those who love much, do much and accomplish much, and whatever is done with love is done well.

"Facts are mere accessories to the truth, and we do not invite to our hearth the guest who can only remind us that on such a day we suffered calamity. Still less welcome is he who would make a Roman holiday of our misfortunes. Exaggeration of what was monstrous is quickly recognised as a sign of egotism, and that contrarious symptom of the same disease which pretends that what is accepted as monstrous was really little more than normal is equally unwelcome."

Max Plowman from Subaltern on the Somme

"One night a man came to our house and told me, "there is a family with eight children. They have not eaten for days." I took some food with me and went.
When I came to that family, I saw the faces of those little children disfigured by hunger. There was no sorrow or sadness in their faces, just deep pain of hunger. I gave the rice to the mother. She divided the rice in two, and went out, carryiing half the rice. when she came back I asked her, "Where did you go?"

She gave me this simple answer, "To my neighbors; they are hungry also!" I was not surprised that she gave -- poor people are really very generous. I was surprised she knew they were hungry. As a rule, when we are suffering, we are so focused on ourselves, we have no time for others."

Nobby, that is an interesting one. Care to elaborate with a sentence or two?

I wish I could, but Karol has died and I don't think he ever elaborated on his quote. However, if stupidity is a gift from God, then I am definitely showing him my gratitude because I have been using his gift every day.

“Look, I really don't want to wax philosophic, but I will say that if you're alive, you got to flap your arms and legs, you got to jump around a lot, you got to make a lot of noise, because life is the very opposite of death. And therefore, as I see it, if you're quiet, you're not living. You've got to be noisy, or at least your thoughts should be noisy and colorful and lively.”

That's a good one, Nobby! I couldn't agree more with the sentiment expressed.

Not sure there's much meaning in the following quote, but it struck my fancy a number of years ago.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Nelson Mandela

"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured. I realised, somehow, through the screaming in my mind, that even in that shackled, bloody helplessness, I was still free: free to hate the men who were torturing me, or to forgive them. It doesn't sound like much, I know. But in the flinch and bite of the chain, when it's all you've got, that freedom is a universe of possibility. And the choice you make, between hating and forgiving, can become the story of your life."

i have to question myself - as to my own responsiblities to find that truth -

like - what and how do i make things happen -

- which path do i take to be responsible in work -
in 'producing a product' if i do make it -

i think i must trust myself in this.

but also at times -be open to dialogue about it

i think that is it - Nobbs -

thanks

“Somewhere someone is thinking of you. Someone is calling you an angel. This person is using celestial colors to paint your image. Someone is making you into a vision so beautiful that it can only live in the mind. Someone is thinking of the way your breath escapes your lips when you are touched. How your eyes close and your jaw tightens with concentration as you give pleasure a home. These thoughts are saving a life somewhere right now. In some airless apartment on a dark, urine stained, whore lined street, someone is calling out to you silently and you are answering without even being there. So crystalline. So pure. Such life saving power when you smile. You will never know how you have cauterized my wounds. So sad that we will never touch. How it hurts me to know that I will never be able to give you everything I have."

these are exquisite nobbs and yet i hope they don't truly reflect a sadness in you.

- there is sun outside -

look - go and see it!

all you have to get through is right now -

- the challenges will come - and you will deal with them then -

all is just right now - so - stop and just

breath a little for - if anything - this is the rollercoaster - of life -

it's good to know you and everyone here

wow - thanks

Cheers Nobby. That's one of my favorite of many Irish toasts. I'll be sure to raise my glass to you tonight and everyone will think I'm just crazy 'cause I'll be toasting what they think is my imaginary friend. By the way, I'll be drinking a nutty irishman when I do it. \:D

This is not really a qoutation, it's to long for that. But I found it good anyways. And instead of 'music' you can put in anything, really.

For some, music is not just a pastime,
It’s an undeniable fact of living,
A blissful slavery of body, mind and soul.
To rise above the ashes of mediocrity is rare,
Yet the gift of song is freely handed out to anyone who cares to receive it,
Instantly shattering our daily drudgery.

The path to persue more then usual,
More than what is safe and known,
Is wrought with time-sharpened jagged blades that cut deep,
Blocking many from the road to something greater,
Beyond the stunted imagination of their peers.

Within the veins of the few,
Passion fills every sinew with a sweet unquenchable purpose,
Calming the fear of those treacherous paths.
Though each slice burns and bleeds,
Still they take each cut
And wear the scars with pride to signal their choice,
That undying pursuit of greater joy within every chord.

And so they say – Watch Me Bleed

'But I don’t want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can’t help that,' said the Cat. 'We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.'
'How do you know I’m mad?' said Alice.
'You must be,” said the Cat. 'or you wouldn’t have come here.'

I am at peace because I am certain of two truths about death.

The first truth is that God will be there when I die, and that he loves me.

The second truth is that when I die, God will show me that all my worldly beliefs are wrong; with the exception of these two truths. And then God will say that it is ok that I was wrong because he loves me.

I have accepted these truths. And that is why I am at peace.

Hey you, out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old
Can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles
Can you feel me?
Hey you, dont help them to bury the light
Dont give in without a fight.

Hey you, out there on your own
Sitting naked by the phone
Would you touch me?
Hey you, with you ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out
Would you touch me?
Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?
Open your heart, Im coming home.

But it was only fantasy.
The wall was too high,
As you can see.
No matter how he tried,
He could not break free.
And the worms ate into his brain.

Hey you, standing in the road
Always doing what youre told,
Can you help me?
Hey you, out there beyond the wall,
Breaking bottles in the hall,
Can you help me?
Hey you, dont tell me theres no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall.

Pink Floyd

Nobby -

I don't think you thought this through -

I find this really offensive -

especially on this site - Ayn Rand - a cult figure -

is too simplistic - and gives a pablum easy answer - that i think is why she was
so popular -

I think volunteerism does exist -

but - in this case - I find this quote - kind of gross to be here -
btw

Personally, I like the quote. Too many victims respond to their own abuse by becoming abusers themselves. These victims sanction the evil done to them by their abusers when they claim that they themselves are justified as abusers because they were abused by others.

Nobby,

Quote:

I would take issue with that statement in regard to the fact that many who were abused broke the cycle, I think the figures are one in six who go on to be abusers,

Bad choice of words on my part. I don't mean to say that all victims go on to be child abusers. What I was trying to say (and what I think Ayn Rand was trying to communicate) was that there is a huge temptation for victims to become evil themselves by using their victimisation to justify hurting other people. This "abuse" can take the form of something as drastic as becoming a perp, or it can take the form of a victim lashing out at his loved ones, or any number of things.

well Nobby - I know your nature by how you've written -

however - this is my point Ayn Rand - woudl right such titiliating - but simplistic ideas -

it takes the context - compltetly away from the situation - and makes a generica -
of experience - now I am sounding simple -

what it does remind me of though

is maybe - the idea of what Buddha said -

"We are not punished for our anger - but by our anger" -

I don't know the context of the quote, but I think, based on The Fountainhead, she is saying that it isn't evil unless you - the victim - allow it to be. In The Fountainhead there is a glorified rape scene, you'd have to read it to understand, it's too complicated and philosophical. But the gist is that our will is all that matters, If you say it wasn't rape then you have disempowered the rapist. The individual is supreme, the individual and his will are inseperable.

A Buddhist exmaple would be in Melbourne years ago a Nun was raped and there was a huge article on it because she didn't care and wasn't pressing charges, her response was: 'All they had to do was ask'. I've never forgotten that.

And also the film: The Pasion Of Ayn Rand showed the very nature I suspected her of. I might be wrong, but she and I share a lot of traits and that is a big character problem for me, and I think I might bring this up with my shrink: Rigid evangelical intellectualism and no time at all for feelings, and this desperate need to be needed, I bet she suffered some trauma in her early life in Russia.

I really struggle with this. You can't be defined by evil, as if the bad things that have happened to you are all that you are. But you can't simply decide they're irrelevant, or that they weren't what they were.

That feels like taking control ("I am such an Ayn Rand hero!"), but all it meant for me was that I had no control over how my life was still being impacted, because I'd decided not to look at it.

Don't remember which comedian this was: ("My friend told me that we all make our own reality. I said, 'No. Psychotics make their own reality. That's an important distinction. Let's not lose sight of that.'")

Genius. I love Shadow.

I was trying to say that I think Ayn Rand suffered some serious trauma and her philosophy was bascially as I've heard American's say "Suck it up!' I hope that's in the right context. that's possibly why she admired men so much, they could compartmentalise their lives and move on like and 'Ayn Rand Hero'. Obviously it doesn't work. But I think the messages in her work for artists are awesome, just not her actual example.

And I think that's where the melodrama comes from too. From suppressing the real emotion.

I think that the Gaia Hypothesis is beautiful, although so far we haven't been able to prove it. Then again, that might just be a matter of perspective and our lack of intellectual breadth. A bacteria would have a difficult time understanding the pond it lives in, so maybe we just aren't ready for Gaia yet.

The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created--created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination.

I've alway's been partial to this one. Because people dontlisten and arent perceptive. If someone is in trouble or need's help but can ask. Nobody takes you seriously until something drastic happens and its right in their faces.

I think its an Armenian proverb

Harboring anger at another is like drinking the glass of poison yourself and then expecting him to die.

I heard that said yesterday by someone I'm acquainted with. She attributed it to someone but I don't remember who and I don't know if I've quoted it exactly right. I have to admit that that is one of my struggles as well as many of us as survivors. It comes in many forms to the point where we may not even recognize it as anger. I was discussing this with a friend of mine this morning who graciously pointed out that fact to me. Now I have a good deal more to think about. Ah well! We keep on keeping on! \:\)

Lots of love,

John

" I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming."

~~Haim Ginott
