Why is it that when I do a site search I only get hits for posts on or after Sept. 9, 2006?

My search criteria very definitely defines the search to be specific to "Any Date".

I had a similar problem. I was searching for a thread for which I had an exact title, but the results said that no such post was found.

Search results do max out at a certain number (I think 300?) so if you were searching for a common phrase that might be why. Also I am not sure how user permissions affect searches (for example if the posts I made in members F&F would display in a search performed by someone who didn't have access to that forum). To be honest I am not sure about a lot of the details of the search function of this forum and I've been confused by my own results or lack of results a couple of times in the past. I think it's a shortcoming of this software.

If no one is getting any results prior to Sept. 9th it might be related to the server issues? I will ask.

I either got no results at all, or a very limited number in the low teens or single digits so that is not the problem. Try it for yourself. Pick a thread from say 6 weeks ago and do a search for a key word. See what you come up with.

I just tried it again with the same results. All search parameters are set to get maximum results. No Go.

Hi guys, well the problem is still here. I just did a search of the whole site for user lostcowboy, any date, I got 12 hits, I should have gotten between 200-300 hits. I looked at the source code for the search page.

Any Date
Since Yesterday
Since 5 Days Ago
Since 10 Days Ago
Since 30 Days Ago


All that looks ok
What I get when I search using (30 days) is the same as I get using (Any Date). Which sounds to me like the major index for the database is messed up, so you end up using the 30 day index. I may be wrong but I think you are going to have to close the site, while recalculating the major index, I hope I am wrong. It would be real nice if there is a master index that is good, and only has to be copied and renamed, lets keep them fingers crossed.

Yup, that does appear to be and issue. I also just did another search and found the problem to be still there. A bit frustratig, but at least we have the site running now which is a far site better than a few weeks ago!

Yes, Clifford, it is still broken. Seems it's either unfixable, or it's really low in the pecking order as far as getting things done!

Oh Well!

Perhaps we should all go over to the contributions page and sign up for the monthly donation plan. That might help get it fixed perhaps?

My own thinking is that they dont want it fixed due to the number of archived posts resurfacing from yesteryear.

Some great minds have passed through MS, and need to be aired now and again, so I dont think old posts are necessarily harmful if brought back.

Actually I think it is related to the server troubles that happened at about the same time the search stopped working. It is not something I can fix myself but I haven't forgotten about it either.
