Actually. Mic Hunter wrote the book: ABUSED BOYS The Neglected Victims of Sexual Abuse.
The poster would be used to raise funds to support this next years conference. Conferences like this cost a lot of money, more than comes from people paying to attend.
This conference draws people who are determined to help all of us who are the victims of abuse. Some of us have been fairly successful in spite of the abuse--but at least in my case I am still in a lot of pain.
geteddie, I would see NOMSV becoming proactive in getting the word out about male sexual victimization, and that there is help and acceptance available.
I live in Milwaukee. About three years ago the Milwaukee Women's center received a grant and the contributed services of a first rate pr group. They made up a series of posters--I have some of them yet if you would like me to mail them to you. They had catchy phrases speaking to men who abuse women. They had poster sizes, they had billboards and they had them on just about every one of the county buses. At the bottom of the posters was a tear off sheet giving info as to where abused women can receive help through out the Milwaukee area.
Mic Hunter has a specific idea for the use of his poster. I think it is a valuable one. And, of course, it would have the pictures of a limited number of men. it is a poster, not a billboard.
The poster project that I would like NOMSV to seek a grant for, would be like the one the Milwaukee women's center had, probably without tear off sheets since there seems to be few places where men can get help from anyone who knows our particular problems.
I understand your anger and frustration. Your boss violated confidentially and I would think he could be reprimanded for it by his boss. I regret that it happened. At the same time, I know you a little from the chat room and I think you know that you are a real man, a good man, a courageous man, even if too many men, probably many who are themselves victims, get freaked out at the idea of male sexual victimization. It seems odd that this exists yet, after to outrage at the news that hundreds, thousands of boys have been abused by my fellow priests. I would think our nation, at least, knows that this is more comon than ever thought of before--and it includees, coaches, teachers and boy scout masters as well as clergy of other faiths as well.
I think that we who are adult survivors have a special passion to prevent and help the boys and teens who are being abused, probably some of them as I wrtie this and others read it.
Peace to your Broken, geteddie and to all of us.
By the way Abused Boys is a terrific book. Most libraries have it. I keep re-readin mine but if someone needed it and could not get it I would send you a copy. Just contact me at wheelock36@yahoo.com
